    Notes: Abstract In a study of the lipid composition of the upland Empetrum nigrum subspp. hermaphroditum and Empetrum nigrum subspp. nigrum with a lowland distribution, no evidence was found to support the suggestion that lipids (triacylglycerols) play a major energy storage role in the leaves of alpine species. On a quantitative basis the triacylglycerols constituted less than 5% of the total lipid in both species and the lowland species possessed the higher levels of total lipid, neutral lipid and triacylglycerols. It is suggested that the presence of a well-developed waxy cuticle might account for the high total lipid levels encountered in dwarf evergreen shrubs.

    Notes: Abstract The understanding and assessment of headache has been handicapped by inadequate assessment of pain behavior. The current study aimed to develop a simple laboratory technique to evaluate a headache sufferer's apparent oversensitivity to, and avoidance of, stimuli such as noise and bright lights. The results revealed that subjects could reliably calibrate the stimuli on a scale from “comfortable” to “definitely unpleasant.” Significant group differentiation (controls/headache prone) was possible on the basis of auditory stimulus sensitivity, irrespective of current pain state. On the other hand, endurance time at an in tense level differentiated subjects in pain from those pain-free, irrespective of group (headache/nonheadache). The advantages and potential of such an objective assessment of pain are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase, were not significantly different from normal whereas that of superoxide dismutase was decreased (P〈0.05) in erythrocytes from patients with multiple sclerosis. Assay of the lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde, after incubation of erythrocytes with 10 mM H2O2 under carefully controlled conditions (peroxide stress test) demonstrated that MS erythrocytes are significantly (P〈0.001) less susceptible to H2O2-induced lipid peroxidation in vitro. This finding suggests that the level of an endogenous antioxidant, possibly vitamin E, may be elevated in MS red cells. After treatment with hyperbaric O2, the activity of MS erythrocyte catalase is significantly (P〈0.01) elevated by 2–6-fold.

    Notes: Abstract The phospholipid composition of erythrocyte membranes from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) was found to be normal, in agreement with previous reports. The transbilayer asymmetry of the glycerophospholipids in MS red cells was probed using bee venom phospholipase A2 and was also found not to be significantly different from normal. Abnormal membrane glycerophospholipid organisation is therefore not involved in the increased red cell size, osmotic fragility, and electrophoretic mobility associated with MS.

    Notes: Abstract Sarcina marina (NCMB 778) grew over the temperature range 20–45°C but no growth was recorded at 15°C or 50°C. At the optimum growth temperature of 34°C the doubling time was 14.5 h. The major polar lipid components, tentatively identified as the diether analogues of phosphatidyl glycerophosphate (PGP), phosphatidyl glycerol (PG), diglycosyl diglyceride (DGD) and triglycosyl diglyceride (TGD), and the major neutral lipid components, tentatively identified as squalene, dihydrosqualene, tetrahydrosqualene, vitamin MK8, geranyl geraniol and di-O-phytanyl glycerol, are identical to those found in other extremely halophilic rods and cocci. The total lipid content varied with growth conditions from 0.6 – 3.2% of the dry cell weight, polar lipids accounted for between 94.3 and 83.6% of the total lipid, the remainder being neutral lipid. In response to both the transition from exponential to stationary phase and a reduction of 14°C in growth temperature, batch cultures showed: (i) an increase in total lipid content; (ii) a decrease in PG and (iii) an increase in PGP. Specific responses to the temperature decrease were (i) increased total lipid content; (ii) no decrease in neutral lipids in stationary phase; (iii) marked reduction in PG and (iv) raised DGD. (i) and (ii) could be mechanisms for increasing membrane fluidity. In common with all other extreme halophiles investigated the alkyl side chains of S. marina polar lipids were identified as the phytanyl (3R, 7R, 11R, 15-tetramethylhexadecyl) group. Its structure did not appear to vary with temperature so that the normal mechanisms for modifying the structure of lipid alkyl side chains to modulate membrane fluidity in response to temperature changes probably does not occur in this group of microorganisms.
