Notes: The lead contents of various foodstuffs pickled and canned in vinegar were measured using ion selective analysis and microprocessor unit on pre-nitric acid digested samples. These included cucumber, sauerkraut, mixed pickles, leeks, and mustard greens. Where possible these values were compared with those of the fresh produce or the product pickled and stored in jars. In all cases studied, the fresh or bottled products showed levels well below the legal limit of 2 ppm (Food & Drug Act, Ottawa, 1975). In the case of the canned products all the lead levels were grossly in excess of the legal limit, varying from 5–10 ppm.

Notes: Abstract Evidence suggests that brushing with a toothpaste may slow plaque reformation over 24 h. This study measured the effect of toothpaste alone on plaque regrowth over a 96 h period and compared the effect with water and the known antiplaque agent chlorhexidine. At 9 a.m. at the beginning of 7,4-day no oral hygiene periods, 10 volunteers were scaled and polished. Al 5 p.m. subjects brushed their own teeth with water until plaque free. Each subject rinsed for I min with 10 ml of a randomly allocated rinse. Rinsing was repeated at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on subsequent days. The rinses were water, chlorhexidine 0.2% or 3 g/10 ml slurries of toothpastes containing (1) monofluorophosphate(MFP), (2) monofluorophosphate + sodium fluoride (MFP+NaF) (3) monofluorophosphate + zinc citrate (MFP+ZCT) (4) stannous fluoride (SnF2) (5) sodium fluoride (NaF). At 16, 24, 48 and 72 h plaque on the buccal surface of the upper and lower premolars, canines and incisors was scored by the Gingival Margin Plaque Index (GMPI) and gram films of plaque samples made. At 96 h plaque was recorded diagraromatically and areas of coverage measured visually (Debris Index) and by planimetry. Progressive plaque formation to a Gingival Margin Plaque Index of 100% at 72 h was observed for toothpaste and water rinses. For chlorhexidine the Gingival Margin Plaque Index at 72 h was 6%, At 96 h plaque areas were significantly less with toothpaste rinses compared with water. Chlorhexidine very significantly reduced plaque areas compared with toothpaste and water. The bacteriological assessment of smears revealed essentially similar plaque development during toothpaste and water rinses and was consistent with previous reports. However, with chlorhexidine the densities of organisms in the smears were greatly reduced. It was concluded that the small effect of toothpaste rinses on plaque accumulation compared with chlorhexidine would not alone represent a true antiplaque effect resulting in therapeutic benefit.

Notes: Abstract A dietary aetiology for tooth staining associated with the use of chlorhexidine has been postulated. The time related activity of chlorhexidine would therefore suggest that evening rinsing would result in less staining than morning rinsing. This study measured tooth and tongue staining and plaque accumulation in a group of 18 volunteers, rinsing once at night or once in the morning with chlorhexidine in a blind cross-over design. Beverage intake during two 10-day periods was prescribed. Significantly more tooth staining, but not tongue staining, was seen with morning rinsing. Plaque accumulation showed a trend to more plaque with morning rinsing, which was not significant. The findings would be consistent with a dietary aetiology for tooth staining. However, these results emphasise the considerable duration of activity of chlorhexidine on surfaces in the oral cavity and the theory of progressive desorption of chlorhexidine from the tooth surface is questioned.

Notes: Summary Haematology parameters were measured in buffalo, Bali, Madura, Ongole and Grati (Friesian cross) bulls fed on either a high concentrate or a high roughage-based diet. Animals fed the high concentrate diet had the higher packed cell volumes and haemoglobin concentrations but lower red blood cell and white blood cell counts. Species differences were significant for all blood parameters measured, except red blood cell count. The buffalo and Bali had the highest packed cell volumes, haemoglobin concentrations and white blood cell counts followed by the Madura, Ongole and Grati bulls. When growth rate and feed efficiency were related to liveweight and blood values, only haemoglobin concentration and red blood cell count had significant partial regression coefficients. Within breed or species blood and performance parameters were significantly related only for buffalo and Madura bulls.

Notes: Three front runners for the next generation of devices for fine line lithography are photo, electron, and X-ray lithography. Each of these techniques has both advantages and disadvantages when considered for direct wafer processing. This paper discusses the problems encountered using each of these techniques and how a trilevel technique can be applied to make each of these techniques more viable.
