    Notes: A group AB mother (Mrs P.D.) gave birth to a group O female baby (C.D.). Extensive study of the blood group genetic markers in both the parents and the child, carried out on several occasions, showed nothing unusual outside the ABO system. Mrs P.D. then, gave birth to a second female baby who was also group O. Mrs P.D. had normal amounts of A, B, H and Lewis antigens in her saliva. The H, A and B agglutinability of her red cells was in the range of normal A2B group. This A2B blood group was characterized by very low A gene-specified glycosyltransferase activity in serum. Moreover this activity was undettable in red blood cell membranes. These results are discussed in the light of various hypotheses in order to explain this unusual transmission of ABO blood group.

    Notes: Abstract The following is a report on a National Conference on Graduate Community Mental Health Centers held April 14–17, 1980, in South Carolina. Sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, the conference was intended to gather information on the status of community mental health centers (CMHC's) that had completed their federal grants, and to solicit recommendations to help assure the survival of centers after cessation of federal grants. This paper (1) describes the conference, (2) summarizes the findings, and (3) presents the conferees' recommendations for the future.

    Notes: Abstract This article describes nontraditional intimacy, marriage and family structures, and patterns of interaction among low-income Black Americans. Census data are reported to document trends in the development of “alternative” and “alternate” family structures for American Blacks. An explanation of why these lifestyles have heretofore been neglected in alternative lifestyle research is suggested. The relation between social structure and ethnic preferences in determining familial lifetyle choices and options is explored. An attempt is made to delineate the social, cultural, and economic forces associated with their emergence. Finally, a theoretical approach to analyzing the genesis of diverse ethnic family structures is explored.

    Race, socioeconomic status, and age: The social context of American masculinity (1984)

    Notes: Abstract This article seeks to delineate the social context of American masculine attainment and identity. The effects of race, socioeconomic status, and age on masculine role perceptions are analyzed for a sample of Black middle-class men. Comparative data from previous research on a sample of Black working-class men are discussed. Comparisons are also made to the findings of a Psychology Today survey sample consisting primarily of middle-class White men. Data are analyzed to exemplify the importance of studying masculine roles within a framework that takes into account the relative social location of American men. Future research needs for the study of masculine role identity from a social structural perspective are discussed.
