Notes: Abstract In an attempt to find clues for the significance of the gene ordering along the eukaryotic chromosome, a system consisting of germinating conidia of Neurospora crassa was studied. Thirteen enzyme activities corresponding to genes widely distributed on five chromosomes were determined in dormant and in germinating conidia. Ten of these enzymes showed lower activities in the resting state, and the time patterns of their increase were determined during germination. The results obtained do not support a scheme of sequential expression of genes during the emergence from dormancy as a counterpart of the sequence of the corresponding genes along the chromosome. Two of the loci studied were analyzed both in the normal (wild-type) ordering and in a translocated position in which the two genes are located in an inverted order respective to the centromere and farther apart from it. The altered order of the genes did not influence significantly the time and pattern of increase in the activities of the corresponding enzymes.

Notes: Abstract We show that if certain Poincaré-like integrals are conserved, then to each configuration coordinate of a system an entity can be associated that is an acceptable generalization of the notion of canonical momentum: In the particular case of standard mechanics, the canonical momenta are retrieved. Under certain general restrictions, the Poincaré momenta make sense for either mechanical or general systems for which we do not have (or are not aware of) entities (like the Lagrangian) that are generally used to define the momentum. The Poincaré momentum may also make sense for systems whose characteristics are difficult, or impossible, to reconcile with the notion of the usual canonical momentum. It is also relevant for certain cases where a Lagrangian exists, but it leads to a mixture of physical and unphysical entities. In particular, we show that while physical canonical momenta do not generally exist in the new Nambu mechanics (because of the dimensionality of state vector space), the Poincaré momenta exist, they are physical, and have the properties we could have expected for the mechanics.

Notes: Abstract In former papers a representation of the quantum Fermi and para-Fermi fields was proposed. This representation is such that the only basic quantum entities are Bose quantum fields. In this paper we show several possibilities of application: (i) to lower the number of “elementary” particles; (ii) to describe as separate states of a fundamental particle other particles that presently are considered as different, and to induce an ordering among them; (iii) to obtain relations among the quantum numbers of those particles; (iv) to obtain a physical picture of some unstable particles. This article is concerned with the physical interpretation of the formalism, and some of the statements that are contained here have a conjectural character.

Notes: Abstract Recently, Y. Nambu stated the principles of a new analytical mechanics which allows an odd, as well as an even, number of phase space variables. In this paper we investigate if this mechanics is independent for the odd case of Dirac's classical mechanics because there are reasons which allow one to suspect that independence fails. We prove that Nambu's mechanics is independent of Dirac's mechanics, at least for the odd cases, so that the Nambu mechanics can, in principle, describe physical systems for which the Dirac mechanics is not suitable. As regards the even case, it is natural to confront the Nambu mechanics with the Hamiltonian one, because both have the same dimension for their phase spaces. In this paper we restrict our study to the comparison of the canonical groups of both formalisms and prove that both groups are different. García Sucre and Kálnay have suggested that perhaps the Nambu mechanics is the natural one for quarks. We end our study with a brief discussion on this subject whose conclusion seems to support their conjecture.
