Abstract Hydrogen permeability of α-iron, copper, silver and gold was studied by a mass spectrometric method, and the coefficients of diffusion of hydrogen in these metals were determined. It was established that the specific hydrogen permeability is related to the solubility of hydrogen in metals. Data obtained for group I metals (copper, silver, gold) indicates that as the atomic number of elements in each group of the periodic system increases, the permeability of hydrogen of metals pertaining to endotermic occluders decreases.
