SUMMARY —A solvent system for thin layer chromatography on silica gel was developed to separate the six classes of carotenoid pigments in paprika. The isolation, Rf values, visible, infra-red, and NMR spectra of capsanthin and its derivatives (capsorubin, capsanthol, 3-ketokryptocapsone, 3-keto-beta-apo-8′-carotenal, capsanthin dilaurate, capsanthin (trimethyl silyl) diether) are presented. NMR and mass spectra of capsanthin are also given as well as beta-carotene and canthaxanthin for comparison.
