    Notes: During the past century revolutionary organizations have, in the name of mankind, sought the violent transformation of the existing international framework. Their aim has been the liberation of nations submerged by fate or repressed by coercion and the destruction of the entire nation-state system, considered a passing phase of history. Even those revolutionary organizations dedicated to a specific national struggle have tended to see the triumph of their cause as a step toward a conflict-free world society in which the basic aspirations of all will have been achieved. In the heyday of anticolonial revolts nationalism per se tended to dominate the ideology of the various movements. In the last decade, with fewer countries to liberate from a foreign oppressor and more to be liberated from domestic regimes supported by worldwide imperialism, the universal ideological context of the revolutionary struggle has become more pronounced. Today most, but by no means all, revolutionary movements proclaim an allegiance to world revolution; nevertheless, as in the past, most continue to act as covert governments or illegal armies, underground or in exile, and to represent not the universal but the particular. Such organizations may have deep sympathies, even specific alliances, with fellow national revolutionary organizations or legitimate governments, but they are often comparable, if not parallel, to normal international arrangements. Even the most militant movements in the vanguard of world revolution, despite all their paraphernalia of antinational ideology, are nearly always established on a national basis and act as alternative national regimes. At best, revolution in one country may be actually allied with similar revolutions, but rarely is it submerged in a fully integrated, universal transnational movement.

    Notes: Abstract Study of the data provided by Stanton and Bell (1969) for certain basaltic rocks from the New Georgia Group reveals an apparent discrepancy between compositional variation and the sequence of phenocryst phases available for fractionation. The discrepancy none-the-less appears explicable in terms of two low-pressure crystal fractionation mechanisms. The first of these we term compensated crystal settling, a process which, it is postulated, allows a substantial amount of magma undergoing crystal settling to maintain its overall composition since crystals settling from it are continually replaced by compositionally similar crystals which settle into it from higher levels. The second process involves selective fractionation of phases sinking at different rates. Slow sinking of plagioclase relative to ferromagnesian minerals is believed to produce cumulus enrichment in plagioclase in the upper part of the chamber, the resultant magmas being erupted as highly porphyritic, high-alumina, basaltic andesites.

    Notes: Summary A light microscopic study has been made of the origin and development of lateral roots inZea mays. The initiation of a lateral occurs adjacent to a xylem pole and involves an increase in cytoplasmic basophilia and subsequent divisions of cells of the pericycle and the parenchyma of the stele of the mother root. Cells derived from the parent pericycle form most of the young lateral but its epidermis and root cap are composed of cells of endodermal origin. Two different types of polysaccharides are secreted by cells of the young lateral root. One type which is PAS-positive and non-metachromatic, is produced by the epidermal cells, while the other type, metachromatic and only slightly PAS-positive, is secreted by the root cap cells.

    Notes: The two endotherms found during DSC analysis of annealed or drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, are discussed in greater. detail. Earlier workers proposed that the endotherms were the result of separate morphologies, i.e., extended-chain and folded-chain crystals, but more recently Roberts and others have presented data on the effect of DSC heating rate on annealed PET endotherm areas which indicate that the higher temperature endotherm is the result of recrystallization in the DSC. The present work explains the reasons for recrystallization, and presents data showing that samples cooled at various rates from the melt also exhibit recrystallization in the DSC, in much the same manner as samples annealed for different lengths of time. Further, by prolonged annealing before analysis, part of the recrystallization exotherm can be observed in the DSC scan. Drawn nylon 66 also exhibits recrystallization in the DSC, in a manner similar to annealed or slowly crystallized PET. The amount of material that recrystallizes is determined by the time and supercooling available between first melting and the ultimate recrystallization temperature, i.e., a temperature at which there is too little time and temperature driving force for further recrystallization to occur. Infrared absorption data show an increase in “regular” fold content during prolonged annealing of PET, while dynamic mechanical data show a marked decrease in a dispersion that is likely associated with the looser fold crystal morphologies. Annealed PET does superheat in the DSC, leaving unanswered the question as to whether any partially extended material is present along with the regular-fold material. For cold-drawn PET, the infrared data indicate disappearance of regular folds and the dynamic mechanical data indicate disappearance of the looser folds. Cold-drawn PET also superheats. These data indicate a likelihood of at least partially extended morphologies in cold-drawn PET; these observations do not apply to PET drawn at high temperatures or to polyethylene.
