A variation of the ULLMANN's biaryl coupling reaction for the synthesis of p-oligophenylenes is described. In this reaction a bifunctional iodo-compound is treated with a large excess of a monofunctional component. This method of synthesis, denoted as a cocondensed ULLMANN reaction, with yields of 40-50%, is explained in detail and the capability of this method is illustrated by numerous examples.In addition to a series of methyl substituted p-oligophenylenes, which includes derivatives from p-terphenyl to the p-septiphenyl, oligophenylenes with terminal or middle positioned fluorene residues as structural element were prepared. The melting points and the solubility of the products are comparatively discussed.

Es wird ein Syntheseverfahren für p-Oligophenylene beschrieben, das eine Variante der ULLMANNschen Biarylverknüpfungsreaktion darstellt. Dabei wird eine bifunktionelle Jodverbindung mit einem größeren Überschuß an einer monofunktionellen Komponente umgesetzt. Dieses als cokondensierende ULLMANN-Reaktion bezeichnete Syntheseprinzip, das Ausbeuten von 40-50% d. Th. ergibt, wird eingehend erläutert und die Leistungsfähigkeit an zahlreichen Beispielen belegt.Neben einer Reihe von methylsubstituierten p-Oligophenylenen, welche Derivate vom p-Terphenyl bis zum p-Septiphenyl einschließt, werden auch Oligophenylene mit endständigem oder mittelständigem Fluorenrest als Strukturelement hergestellt. Schmelzpunkt und Löslichkeit der Produkte werden vergleichend diskutiert.
