Notes: Optical resolution of 22 [2,2]paracyclophane derivatives was examined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamates) of cellulose and amylose as chiral stationary phases. Most compounds were completely separated into enantiomers at least on one of the stationary phases. The preparation of hte new cyclophane derivatives 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, and 19 as wel as a new procedure for the synthesis of 4-fluoro-[2,2]paracyclophane (3) are described.

Notes: Nitro- and Allyloxy-Substituted Helical [2.2]Metacyclophanes: Synthesis, Circular Dichroism and Crystal StructuresThe preparations of the title compound 3a, intraannularly nitro-functionalized, of the extraannularly substituted reference compound 3b, and of the sulfone 4 are described. Enantiomeric resolution of these helical phanes was accomplished on (+)-PTrMA and cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenyl)carbamate by HPLC. Racemization of the enantiomers of 3b is faster than that of the previously reported extraannularly substituted phanes. The crystal structure of 3a as well as that of the allyl ether 3d show severe distortions of the benzene rings; the CD spectrum of 3a is pointing at an intramolecular charge-transfer complex, an effect that cannot be evaluated from the CD spectrum of 3b.

Notes: α-(Alkoxymethyl) acrylates, such as methyl α-(phenoxymethyl) acrylate, benzyl α-(methoxymethyl)acrylate (BMMA), benzyl α-(benzyloxymethyl)acrylate, and benzyl α-(tert-butoxymethyl)acrylate, were synthesized, and their polymerizability and the stereoregularity of the polymers obtained by radical and anionic methods were investigated. The radically obtained polymers were found to be atactic by 13C- and 1H-NMR analyses, but the polymers obtained with lithium reagents in toluene at -78°C were highly isotactic. Further, it is noteworthy that isotactic polymers were also produced with lithium reagents even in tetrahydrofuran. Effects of polymerization temperature and counter cation on stereoregularity were clearly observed in the polymerization of BMMA, and a potassium reagent afforded an almost atactic polymer. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Optical resolution of six β-lactams was examined by HPLC using chiral stationary phases consisting of tris((R)-, (RS)-, and (S)-1-phenylethylcarbamate)s of cellulose and amylose. All β-lactams were optically resolved at least by one of the carbamates. Amylose tris((S)-1-phenylethylcarbamate) showed high optical resolving abilities for some β-lactams.

Notes: A novel chiral monomer, benzyl α-[(1-phenylethoxy)methyl]acrylate was synthesized, and the stereoregularity and chiroptical property of the polymers obtained by radical and anionic polymerizations were investigated. Anionic polymerization in toluene provided a polymer with high isotacticity regardless of optical purity of the monomer and difference of counter cations, Li+ and Mg2+, while radical polymerization appears to yield an atactic polymer. The isotactic copolymers anionically obtained from a mixture of (R)- and (S)-monomers showed peak splitting probably due to the triad arrangement of (R) and (S) groups of side chains in the resonance of 13C-NMR spectra. The isotactic polymer prepared from enantiomerically pure (R)-monomer ([α] 25 365 = +157°) with n-BuLi in toluene exhibited higher specific rotation ([α] 25 365 = +262°) than that of the radical polymer ([α] 25 365 = +162°). This may be explained by regular arrangement of optically active groups along the polymer chain of the isotactic polymer. Chirality 10:711-716, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Polymerization of diphenyl-2-pyridylmethyl methacrylate was carried out with the complexes of organolithium compounds with 22 chiral ligands. Helix-sense-selectivity of the polymerization was largely affected by a slight structural difference of chiral ligands. (+)-(S)-2-(1-Pyrrolidinylmethyl)pyrrolidine was the most effective ligand in producing a one-handed helical polymer with narrow molecular weight distribution.

Notes: Separation and optical resolution of 6 diastereomers and 25 racemates of β-lactams were examined by HPLC on chiral stationary phases composed of six cellulose and one amylose tris(phenylcarbamate) derivatives. Most β-lactams were optically resolved at least by one of the derivatives. The absolute configuration of β-lactams was estimated by CD spectroscopy.
