Notes: Abstract Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) is used to probe the micro-structural changes in the polymer polycarbonate in terms of the changes in free volume hole size and their content as a function of temperature. The measured spectra are best fitted to three lifetime component analysis. The average hole size in the amorphous regions is determined from the measured Ortho Positronium (O-Ps) lifetime τ3 by following the treatment of Nakanishi et al. On the other hand, information about defects in the crystalline regions is revealed by trapped positrons lifetime τ2. In this polymer the average hole radius varies from 2.71 Å to 2.77 Å. The present study indicates that this polymer has a glass transition temperature of 152°C. Further, we have calculated the trapping rates in the ordered and disordered regions of the polymer based on Goldanskii's kinetic equations and an attempt is made for the first time to estimate the activation energy in the amorphous and crystalline regions separately.

Notes: Abstract There have not been many case reports of imperforate anus with congenital short colon (pouch colon syndrome). On the Indian subcontinent it is a commonly encountered entity in high ano rectal anomalies. Eighteen cases of pouch colon syndrome were treated in a period of 2 1/2 years, which constituted 26.08% of all high anorectal anomalies. All patients were male and the invertogram was diagnostic in all cases. Associated congenital malformations were common. Most of the patients were in poor general condition at the time of admission. Post-operative pulmonary complications and septicaemia were common. Pouch colostomy was performed in all cases. In the immediate post-operative period 44.44% of all patients died. A pull-through colonorraphy was done as a definitive procedure in 1 case.

Notes: Abstract Postoperative pain relief by caudal epidural buprenorphine, a highly lipid-soluble, semisynthetic derivative of thebaine, has not been reported in children. Over a period of 1 year, 58 children undergoing various surgical procedures were given 3 μg/kg epidural buprenorphine via the caudal route. No serious side effects were encountered; on the contrary, the excellent and long-lasting pain relief (about 7 days) observed in the majority (91.38%) of the cases as compared with other opioids should go a long way toward reducing the psychological trauma otherwise suffered by children undergoing hospitalization and surgery.

Notes: Abstract A rare case of transverse testicular ectopia in a 2-year-old child presented as bilateral undescended, nonpalpable testes at the Children's Hospital, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Because of its rarity and other interesting features, it is reported with a brief review of the literature.

Notes: Abstract Agenesis of the bladder, one of the rarest anomalies of the urinary bladder, was for the first time managed successfully by primary ileocecal functional bladder reconstruction at the Children's Hospital, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. The salient features along with a review of literature are presented.

Notes: Abstract Hydatid cysts developing primarily in the common bile duct are extremely rare. Occasionally, hydatid cysts rupture into the extrahepatic biliary ducts and cause obstruction [1–7]. Two children with intact hydatid cysts in the common bile duct and choledochal cysts were seen during a 2-year period in the Paediatric Surgery Division of the Children's Hospital, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The details of their presentation and operative management are reported.
