    Notes: Recently, the wavelet analysis is being applied to the various fields, such as image data compression in informatics and spectrum analysis of the electrocardiogram. In the present article, we propose the two approaches, employing the wavelet analysis for the human heart diagnosis. One is the data base approach, and the other is an inverse approach searching for the magnetic field source of the human heart. The data base approach is an application of the data compression to the magnetocardiogram. Also, the magnetic field source searching is an application of the spectrum analysis to the magnetocardiogram. The results reveal that the data base approach makes it possible to identify the normal or abnormal heart, and the magnetic field source search is capable of estimating the current distribution of a distinct heart. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Although the picture of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling in metal/metal multilayers is well-established, it is not clear how the picture can be extensively modified for coupling across insulating or semiconducting spacer layers. Unusual temperature sensitive interlayer coupling has recently been observed in Fe/Si/Fe sandwiches and Fe/Si multilayers.123 The spacer has been claimed to be a metastable metallic FeSi with CsCl structure in the Fe/Si multilayers,4 and a transition from AF coupling to biquadratic coupling has been observed with decreasing temperature in Fe/FeSi multilayers.56 In this study, interlayer coupling has been investigated as a function of nominal Si layer thickness tSi in Co/Si multilayers. The multilayers were grown at ambient temperature on water cooled thermally oxidized Si substrates by ion beam sputtering at a base pressure of 3×10−7 Torr. The sputtering was conducted using 1.8×10−4 Torr Ar ions and an acceleration voltage of 400 V. Co was shown to have hcp structure with (002) texture by x-ray and transmission electron diffractions. From the magnetization curve, the coupling was ferromagnetic below tSi=0.8 nm, changed to antiferromagnetic above 0.8 nm Si and disappeared at tSi〉1.7 nm, exhibiting nonoscillation. We have estimated interlayer coupling J between Co layers across the spacer from the saturation field Hs using the relation of Hs=4J/dMs, where d is the Co layer thickness and Ms is the saturation magnetization. The interlayer coupling was also investigated using FMR for Co/Si/Co sandwiches, which demonstrates an exponentially decay of the coupling with increasing tSi, and gives AF coupling of J=−3.6×10−2 erg/cm2 for a 10 nm Co/1.5 nm Si/10 nm Co sandwich. The cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy exhibited the spacer consisting of Co silicide with amorphous nature, formed in the interface. Temperature dependence of the coupling was investigated using FMR and compared with that of Fe/Si multilayers. Substrate dependence of the interlayer coupling was also investigated.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ag ions were implanted in LiNbO3 at energies of 25 keV and 3 MeV. Optical absorption spectra were measured in the visible range. A large absorption peak due to small colloidal Ag metal was observed at 460 and 510 nm for the as-implanted sample at 3 MeV and 25 keV, respectively. Subsequently, the samples were heated in air up to 600 °C. The absorption peak moved toward longer wavelengths up to 560 nm when the sample was heated at high temperature. Small droplets of metallic Ag expelled from the implanted layer formed on the surface of the sample even when the samples were held at room temperature. The number and size of the droplets grew with time and their growth was accelerated when the samples were heated at high temperature. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Previously, we have proposed a strategic dual image (SDI) method to obtain the finite element solution of open boundary magnetic field problems. Also, we have derived a complex permeability from a Chua-type magnetization model. Combination of this complex permeability with the SDI method is now applied to exploit a new high frequency characteristic measurement device for thin magnetic films. Numerical simulation suggests that our new measurement method yields far superior results compared with those of the conventional one.

    Notes: Optical characteristics of LiNbO3 implanted with Au+ ions at energy of 23 keV were studied. The color of the surface of the LiNbO3 was changed to blue-green and a large absorption peak around 620 nm was observed. The surface morphology was also found to change with time. Metallic Au dots were observed on the surface after implantation and grew from day to day when the samples were held at room temperature. The absorption peak produced by Au+ implantation was relatively stable toward thermal treatment compared to that of Cu+ implantation into LiNbO3. But as the sample was heated at temperatures higher than about 500 °C, this peak gradually decreased and finally disappeared. These characteristics were explained fairly well by the behavior of Au colloids formed in the surface layer of LiNbO3. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Previously, we have proposed a method of solution for the inverse problems, and successfully applied it to the biomagnetic fields. In the present article, we apply our inverse approach to the leakage magnetic field source searching for the notebook computers. As a result, it is found that our inverse approach is quite effective in searching for the leakage magnetic field source. The validity of our solutions is carefully examined by comparing the measured and calculated magnetic field distributions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Polyphase eddy current testing is proposed. The operating principle of this system is as follows. The polyphase eddy current testing system may be regarded as one of the polyphase transformers. Primary balanced polyphase coils are star connected and secondary polyphase circuits are composed of the target. When balanced polyphase currents are fed into the primary coils, zero phase voltage is detected if the target has defects. No zero phase voltage is detected if the target has no defects. It is found that this method has a higher sensitivity compared with that of conventional eddy current testing.

    Notes: Among the various nondestructive testing methods, the electric potential method requires relatively simple device and measurement. However, because of the high electrical contact resistance, sometimes it is difficult to measure the correct local electric potentials by direct contact. In order to overcome this difficulty, method is proposed which involves substituting the local magnetic field for electric potential measurements. The comparison with the conventional electric potential method demonstrates the usefulness this method, especially for materials with low resistivity.
