Notes: Abstract The repeated administration of amphetamine (AMPH) results in a pattern of behavioral changes which includes an augmentation of some behaviors, generally referred to as behavioral sensitization. Some investigators have suggested that an increased dopamine (DA) response to AMPH challenge may underlie behavioral sensitization, while others have reported behavioral sensitization in the absence of an enhanced DA response. Because temporal and dosage parameters of the AMPH pretreatment regimen have been suggested to play a role in the appearance of an enhanced DA response, we utilized a variety of AMPH pretreatment regimens to assess the relationship between pretreatment dose of AMPH, duration of withdrawal and the DA response in caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens to a subsequent AMPH challenge. Under our experimental conditions, behavioral sensitization was observed after each of these treatments in the absence of an enhanced DA response in either brain region.

Notes: Summary The spermiogenesis and sperm ultrastructure of Anguilla australis schmidtii and A. dieffenbachii is described. During spermiogenesis the chromatin material condenses into the crescent-shaped head of the mature sperm. By elongation of the sperm head the mitochondrion is displaced to the anterior of the head remote from the posterior centriolar apparatus. A ciliary rootlet becomes segregated during spermiogenesis to form a membrane covered, striated, rod-like appendage. From the proximal centriole arise two sets of filaments, each containing three subfibrils. One group of five filaments extends anteriorly along the inner concave side of the head. A group of four modified filaments pass along the outer, convex, side. The middle subfibril B of each triplet in the group of four filaments is flattened and joins the two subfibrils A and B, forming a binocular shaped structure. The motile flagellum has a 9 + 0 axonemal pattern.

Notes: Massive-cluster impact (MCI) ionization was found to be capable of producing high secondary-ion yields from biological samples without the use of a liquid matrix. Dry samples of molecules as large as cytochrome c were observed to be efficiently desorbed without significant fragmentation by the MCI beam of glycerol clusters. In addition, signals from protonated molecules retained a significant proportion of their initial intensity even after several minutes exposure to the primary beam. It was determined that these remarkable phenomena are not the result of the build-up of a layer of glycerol caused by the cluster bombardment.

Notes: A focused Cs+ beam was used to obtain secondary ion mass spectra and images from samples of stearic acid on gold before and after ablation by a beam of masive cluster ions. Ablation appears to have two effects on secondary ion emission. First, the number and intensity of peaks reflecting contamination are substantially reduced. Secondly, the absolute intensity of secondary ion current characteristic of the analyte increases. These features simplify mass spectra and improve contrast in the images obtained.
