    Notes: The kinetic-energy anisotropies of fifteen diatomic hydrides AH with A = H, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl are calculated from self-consistent-field wave functions constructed from extended basis sets of Slater-type orbitals. It is found that there is no consistent ordering of the bond-parallel and bond-perpendicular components of the kinetic energy with respect to separated atom values. An analysis of the orbital contributions reveals that nonbonding π orbitals make large contributions to the total kinetic-energy anisotropy. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to deduce anything about the nature of the chemical bond from the total anisotropy. However, certain dimensionless orbital kinetic-energy anisotropies are useful for interpretative studies because, in free atoms, these quantities have fixed values that depend only on the symmetry of the orbital.

    Notes: Calculations of a wide range of position and momentum space properties of 23 orbital basis sets for atomic helium are performed to supplement our previous work. The combined results on 94 orbital basis sets are used to demonstrate that, as in the case of d-orbitals, the least squares error is not as discriminating as other information theoretic measures of overall quality for s-orbitals. Detailed comparisons suggest that constrained variation can improve the overall quality of the resulting orbital provided that the constraints are selected carefully to complement the bias inherent in the energy expectation value and the functional form of the basis functions.

    Notes: Self-consistent-field (SCF) wave functions are used to calculate cross sections for the elastic and inelastic scattering of fast electrons and x-rays from CH4 and C2H2 molecules. The effects of basis set choice and free rotation on these cross sections are investigated. The utility of an approximate scheme to correct SCF inelastic cross sections for the effects of electron correlation is examined. The probability density for the interelectronic distance, or radial intracule density, is obtained and discussed.

    Notes: The expectation values 〈rk〉 (-2 ≤ k ≤ 4, k = 10), values of the charge density ρ(r) at selected points, and coefficients in the MacLaurin expansion of ρ(r) are used to test the quality of 71 orbital basis sets used for the atomic helium Hartree-Fock problem. These tests in position space are complementary to the momentum space tests previously carried out [Int. J. Quantum Chem. 21, 419 (1982)]. Information theoretic measures with respect to either or both position and momentum space properties are subsequently defined and the orbitals are ranked accordingly. These measures indicate that, for a given orbital, momentum space properties are more poorly predicted than position space ones. Moreover an improvement in the virial ratio does not necessarily lead to a more balanced orbital with respect to position and momentum space properties. Basis sets containing Slater-type orbitals are again found to be rather accurate. The exponentially damped rational function is confirmed to be the outstanding two-parameter unconventional orbital.

    Notes: The differences between the anisotropic momentum densities of the isoelectronic molecules N2, CO, and BF are examined by the partial-wave decomposition technique. It is shown that in momentum space a qualitative manifestation of the different bonding situations in these diatomics occurs in the leading anisotropic component of the partial-wave expansion of the momentum density, and a quantitative manifestation in the anisotropy of the kinetic energy tensor. It is found that the isotropic momentum density is monotonically decreasing in these three molecules.

    Notes: A detailed appraisal of Gaussian-type orbital (GTO) and Slater-type orbital (STO) expansions of 3d orbitals is carried out for the 2S state of copper - a case that should be maximally unfavorable for STOs. The appraisal is based on a wide variety of both position and momentum space properties and utilizes an information theoretic quality assessment technique. It is found that GTO expansions are not as useful as STO expansions for the prediction of 〈p8〉, 〈p7〉, and 〈r-6〉 because these properties probe the functional deficiencies of GTOs at small r and large p. On the other hand, GTO expansions can predict accurate values of large r properties like 〈r8〉 despite the fact that their position space asymptotic decay is too fast. Unlike the case of s orbitals in helium, there does not seem to be any consistent ordering between accuracy in position space and accuracy in momentum space. The quality measures are found to be very useful for pinpointing the deficiencies of various expansions. This information enables us to construct easily a new GTO and a new STO expansion that are more accurate than any of the others in the literature. It is suggested that one STO is worth no more than two GTOs in the case of d orbitals.

    Notes: Self consistent field wave functions of good, and in many cases of near Hartree-Fock, quality are used to test local density functional approximations to momentum moments for 122 linear molecules. Heuristic corrections to the local density functionals are suggested. The modified functionals for the kinetic energy and mean momentum have median errors less than 0.6% and maximum errors less than 1.7% on this large sample of 122 molecules. Moreover, the functionals correctly approach the Thomas-Fermi limit for large N, and should be competitive with gradient expansions. No counter examples were found for some previously conjectured [J. Chem. Phys. 85, 958 (1986)] bounds; serious efforts to prove them rigorously are invited.

    Notes: Discrete and continuum contributions to the multipole polarizabilities and shielding factors of atomic hydrogen are computed. The discrete series show logarithmic convergence which can be accelerated by the u-transform. The continuum contributions increase with increasing multipole order and are already dominant in the quadrupole polarizability and shielding factor. The shielding factors have greater continuum contributions than the polarizabilities.

    Notes: The electronic intracule density, a three-dimensional contraction of the spinless electron pair density, is the probability density function for an interelectronic vector. A computationally efficient algorithm for the evaluation of the basic two-electron intracule integral for GTOs is presented. In order to provide an initial understanding of the topography of intracule distributions, anisotropic intracule densities for the X1Σg+ ground states of the H2 and N2 molecules are reported and analyzed.
