Notes: The molecular bond rupture rate during ozone attack of torsionally loaded rubber was determined from electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. The rupture rate was successfully correlated by a Griffith-type energy balance to the strain-energy release rate in the samples. These observations substantiate the results from a similar study on tensile loading previously reported. In both cases there is a one-to-one correspondence between the rate of bond rupture (or crack growth) and the rate of energy release from the strain field and external work. A fracture energy, γn, of approximately 5×10-12 (±20%) ergs per free radical formed during the cracking was experimentally determined.

Notes: Summary Cell suspensions prepared by enzymatic dispersion of whole rat adrenal glands for the purpose of studying adrenocortical cells were found to contain chromaffin cells even though they are commonly thought to not survive in such preparations. These cells fluoresced when treated with methods specific for catecholamines. The fluorescent cells persisted in the cultures of “cortical” cells, took on the morphology of neurons in the cultures, maintained their specific catecholamine fluorescence in long-term cultures, and ultrastructurally were identical to chromaffin cells.

Notes: Elemental X-Ray mappings on Portland cement clinkers have been obtained using a scaning electron microscope-energy dispersive system (SEM-EDS). Using this method, elemental mapping of the major constituents of cement (Ca, Si, Al, Fe) can be generated in as little as 300 s, while the minor constituents(〈10%) Such as Na, Mg, P, S, K yield poorer contrast mappings. The technique used and the resultant mappings obtained are discussed.
