Notes: The nonequilibrium tray model proposed by Young and Stewart (1990) is used to correlate published fractionation data from sieve tray columns 0.45 m to 1.2 m in diameter. The model contains a dimensionless coefficient a00 to describe the interphase heat and mass transfer, and a Peclet number Pe to describe the lateral mixing of the liquid on the tray. The coefficient a00 is investigated as a function of tray geometry and hydrodynamic variables, using an error-in-variables extension of a multiresponse parameter estimation algorithm. Data from several sources are well correlated by a simple dimensionless relation for a00, with Pe predicted from the results of Bennett and associates (1983, 1991).

Notes: Multiresponse data are familiar outputs of experiments and processes involving multicomponent mixtures, multiple streams or multiple methods of observation. The resulting arrays of data exhibit various structures, including rectangular (no missing values), block-rectangular, and irregular (missing values with no simple pattern). Methods for modeling such data are described, emphasizing parameter estimation strategy and available software. Experiences in multiresponse modeling are then reviewed for several chemical engineering problems.

Notes: The inverse probability theorem of Bayes is used, along with sampling theory, to obtain objective criteria for choosing among rival models. Formulas are given for the relative posterior probabilities of candidate models and for their goodness of fit, when the models are fitted to a common data set with Normally distributed errors. Cases of full, partial and minimal variance information are treated. The formulas are demonstrated with three examples, including a kinetic study of a catalytic reaction.

Notes: A nonequilibrium model for fractionation trays with lateral dispersion is analyzed by a collocation method. Mobile-interface turbulent boundary-layer theory is used to describe the local heat and mass transfer rates with allowance for vapor superheat, liquid subcooling, and net molar transfer between the phases. Multicomponent transport is incorporated by a linearized matrix method. Numerical integration of the gradients through the tray permits use of local flows and states, as well as local phase equilibrium expressions. A collocation scheme solves the model efficiently; two grid points normally suffice to represent a tray. The model contains just two adjustable coefficients, a00 and Pe; the dependence of these on tray geometry and hydrodynamics remains to be investigated.

Notes: Orthogonal collocation is used to analyze the dispersion and chemical conversion of a multicomponent fluid pulse in a laminar isothermal flow in a catalytic tube. Homogeneous and heterogeneous first-order chemical reactions are included, and a full matrix diffusion law is used. The collocation method represents the dynamics well over wide ranges of system parameters and reaction time. Radial averaging approaches prove less convenient, since the dispersion coefficients thus introduced are complicated functions of time, transport properties and chemical kinetics.
