    Notes: Abstract A multisite field experiment was conducted to study the effect of topdressed Se-enriched Ca(NO3)2 (CN) and basal applied NPK on the selenium (Se) concentration in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Selenium was applied either through CN (at the rates of 0, 6.45, and 12.91 g Se ha−1) or NPK (5.83 g Se ha−1). Selenium concentration in wheat grains increased consistently with increasing rate of Se-enriched CN or NPK. However, the superiority of Se-enriched CN over NPK in raising the Se concentration in wheat grain depended on location and growth conditions. At the same rate both methods of Se-application were found to be equally effective in raising the Se concentration of wheat grains. The Se concentration of grain was generally higher in the light textured soils than in the medium to heavy textured soils. Without Se application, the Se-concentration in wheat grain was about 16µg kg−1 which is regarded insufficient to meet the Se requirement for Se in animal and human. Calcium nitrate enriched with 25 mg Se kg−1 (6.45 g Se ha−1) increased the Se concentration in wheat grain to a desired level.

    Notes: Abstract InDrosophila ananassae, artificial selection was carried out for high and low mating propensity for 15 generations. Response to selection was from about F5, with rapid divergence in mating frequencies in replicates of both fast and slow lines. To assess the effect of selection on the two sexes, females and males of the selected lines were tested against their respective counterparts of the control line after 15 generations. Significant differences in mating propensity were observed when selected males were tested against the control females, which suggests that males were much more affected by selection than females. After 15 generations the fast and slow lines (both replicates) were crossedinter se and mating frequencies of F1 hybrids were studied in the same way as during the selection experiment. F1 flies had a higher mating activity compared to their parental lines when males were derived from fast lines to produce hybrids. On the other hand, F1 hybrids produced by crossing slow-line males with fast-line females showed mating frequencies similar to those of the slow parental lines. These findings suggest that mating propensity inD. ananassae is under the control of polygenes. Furthermore, the significant differences in mating propensity of hybrids produced by the fast and slow males indicate the possibility of a Y-linked influence on mating propensity inD. ananassae.

Response to selection resulted in rapid divergence in pupation height in replicates of both high and low lines. There was a significant difference in mean pupation height among high, low, and control lines. Regression coefficients for both high and low lines were significantly different from zero. The realized heritability over 10 generations was 45–49 for the high lines and 26–29 for the low lines. The F1 hybrids produced by making reciprocal crosses between high and low lines showed intermediate pupation height. These findings suggest that pupation height inD. ananassae is under polygenic control, with a substantial amount of additive genetic variation.

    Notes: Summary The relative viabilities of homozygous and heterozygous karyotypes were measured by making crosses between strains ofD. ananassae homozygous for ST or inverted gene orders in the second and third chromosomes. The strains utilized during the present study originated from widely separated localities in India, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabaru, Malaysia and Chian Mai, Thailand. The presence of heterosis in many interpopulation crosses is evident from the results which show that the inversion heterozygotes formed by chromosomes coming from distant populations exhibit heterosis. On the other hand, heterosis is absent in two intrapopulation crosses. Thus the present results provide evidence that heterozygosis for many genes and gene complexes does produce high fitness without previous selectional coadaptation.

    Notes: Abstract An in vitro growth system was used to determine the virulence of two samples of Striga gesnerioides from Zakpota in southern Benin. Cowpea variety B301, previously considered resistant to all races of S. gesnerioides, was susceptible to both samples of the parasite. Two other cowpea varieties, 58–57 and IT81D-994, were totally resistant. Resistance in 58–57 was associated with a hypersensitive necrosis of infected roots, whilst IT81D-994 supported production of small S. gesnerioides tubercles with stems which failed to develop. Striga gesnerioides from southern Benin is the fourth race of the parasite to be identified, and the first with virulence on variety B301. The implications for breeding cowpeas with resistance to S. gesnerioides are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Two breeding procedures were compared in two cowpea crosses. Both procedures were started from the same selected F2 plants in each cross. For the early generation yield testing, the F3 lines were yield tested and a pedigree and bulk methods followed in F4 and F5. Each F5 line was bulked to provide seed for a yield test in F6. In the Single Seed Descent (SSD) procedure, a single seed was taken from each F2 plant to produce the F3 generation. The procedure was repeated for the F4 and F5. The F6 SSD lines and the F6 yield testing lines were compared in yield tests. The results showed that differences in yielding ability of F3 lines persisted over generations indicating that selection was effective. This was confirmed by the high significant correlations between F3 yields and those of later generations which ranged from r=0.51* to 0.85**. The grain yields of lines derived by the single seed descent procedure were as good as those derived from early generation yield testing. Significant linear correlation between visual rating of F3 and F6 yields with actual yields revealed that it is possible to identify promising lines of cowpea visually.

    Notes: Abstract The O2 uptake through water has been measured in case of Heteropneustes fossilis during development and growth and its relationship to body size established. A higher rate of O2 uptake during the early phase of ontogenesis is related to intense growth of the respiratory surface area and increasing metabolic demand of the fish. The logarithmic plot of data for O2 uptake in relation to body size shows a statistically significant two-component curve; one related to the fish when it is a fully aquatic breather and the other when it changes to bimodal gas exchange. The onset of the air breathing habit brings about a 40% drop in O2 uptake through water, which is made good through the newly developed air breathing organ.

    Notes: Abstract Drosophila ananassae is a cosmopolitan and domestic species. It occupies a nuique status among the Drosophila species due to certain peculiarities in its genetic behaviour. The most unusual feature of this species is spontaneous male recombination in appreciable frequency. The present review summarises the work done on population and behaviour genetics of D. ananassae from India. Population dynamics of three cosmopolitan inversions has been studied in Indian population of D. ananassae and it is evident from the results that there is a considerable degree of genetic divergence at the level of inversion polymorphism. In general, the populations from south India show more differentiation than those from the north. These three cosmopolitan inversions, which are coextensive with the species, exhibit heterosis. Interracial hybridization does not lead to beaakdown of heterosis, which suggests that evidence for coadaptation is lacking in geographic populations of D. ananassae. Heterosis appears to be simple luxuriance rather than populational heterosis (coadaptation). Unlinked inversions occur in random associations, indicating no interchromosomal interactions. However, two inversions of the third chromosome often show strong linkage disequilibrium in laboratory populations, which is due to epistatic gene interaction and suppression of crossing-over. Genetic variations for certain allozyme polymorphism and sternoleural bristle phenotypes in Indian populations of D. ananassae have also been observed. A number of investigations have also been carried out on certain aspects of behaviour genetics of Indian D. ananassae. There is evidence for sexual isolation within D. ananassae. Significant variations in mating propensity of several isofemale strains, inversion karyotypes, the diminishing effects of certain mutations on sexual activity of males and positive response to selection for high and low mating propensity provide evidence for genetic control of sexual behaviour in D. ananassae. Males contribute more to variation and thus are more subject to intra-sexual selection than females. Evidence for rare male mating advantage has also been presented. Geographic strains of D. ananassae show variation with respect to oviposition site preference. The results of studies on pupation site preference, which is an important component of larval behaviour, suggest that larval pupation behaviour in D. ananassae is under polygenic control with a substantial amount of additive genetic variation.

    Notes: Abstract In areas where soils supply inadequate Se to crops to meet animal nutritional needs, it may be necessary to supplement Se in some fashion. This greenhouse experiment was designed to study the effect of selenate and selenite, incorporated with a Cl- or a SO4-based NPK (16-5-12) fertilizer added to a low-Se soil, on the Se concentration in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The sandy soil was limed to pH 5.5 and 6.5 prior to receiving 0, 0.03, or 0.06 mg Se kg−1 of soil with each NPK source each year for two years. The SO4-based NPK fertilizer treatment was used only at the 0.06 mg Se kg−1 rate. In the third year, the residual effect of the Se applied in the first 2 years was studied. The grain yield among treatments differed significantly but the effects of the rate or source were not consistent in all the years. However, significantly higher yields were obtained at pH 6.5 than at pH 5.5. Selenium concentration and uptake in wheat grain increased in proportion to the applied selenate but not selenite. However, selenite increased the Se concentration and uptake over the control. The concentration and uptake of Se were higher from selenate than from selenite. The effect of the Cl- and SO4-based NPK fertilizers was different on selenate and selenite. Selenium accumulation in wheat grain was greater from the Cl-based NPK fertilizer when selenate was used but it was greater from the SO4-based NPK fertilizer when selenite was used. The Se concentration in wheat, especially from selenate, was generally higher at the higher pH level except in the first year where it was higher at the lower pH level. The uptake of Se from the Se-enriched NPK fertilizers was generally as high as from the Se applied separately. The residual effect of both sources of Se applied in the first 2 years was very poor in the third year. The results suggest that the Se concentration in wheat grain can be increased by incorporating the Se salts in the NPK fertilizers but more selenate is recovered than selenite. Selenate should, however, be incorporated in a Cl-based NPK fertilizer to avoid the ionic competition from SO4 ions in the SO4-based NPK fertilizer. The uptake of Se is generally higher at pH 6.5 than at pH 5.5.

    Notes: Abstract A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of Se contained in calcium nitrate, top-dressed at different growth stages, on the Se concentration in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Selenium as sodium selenate was added to Ca (NO3)2 and NPK (21-4-10) during the manufacturing process. A silty clay soil with soil pH of 6.1 was used. Four selenium treatments incorporated in Ca (NO3)2 were top-dressed at both the tillering and heading growth stages at rates of 0, 15, 30, and 45 mg kg−1 of Ca (NO3)2 fertilizer equivalent to about 0, 0.003, 0.007, 0.01 mg Se kg−1 soil, respectively. A fifth treatment of 20 mg Se kg−1 of NPK (21-4-10%) equivalent to 0.007 mg Se kg−1 soil was basal dressed at the time of sowing. Calcium nitrate with or without Se was top-dressed at the rate of 35 mg N kg−1. In addition all pots received a basal dose of N at the rate of 7 0 mg N kg−1 through a NPK(21-4-10) fertilizer. The Se-enriched Ca (NO3)2 increased the uptake and concentration of Se in wheat significantly (ρ〉0.05) with increasing concentration of Se in the fertilizer applied. The Se concentration in wheat grain increased from 〈1.1 to 468µg Se kg−1 in the first year when the concentration in the Se-enriched Ca (NO3)2 was increased from 0 to 45 mg Se kg−1 but the corresponding increase in the second and third year was lower. The Se concentration in the grain was more than twice of that in the straw. The uptake and concentration of Se in wheat, except in the second year, was generally higher when Se was top-dressed at heading as compared to that when it was top-dressed at tillering but the concentration differences between time of application were not statistically significant(ρ〉0.05). Basal application of Se-enriched NPK (0.007 mg Se kg−1 soil) was only half as effective as an equivalent rate of Se in top-dressed Seenriched Ca(NO3)2 in increasing the Se concentration in wheat and the concentration levels among these treatments were significantly (ρ〉0.01) different. It was concluded that topdressing of Se-enriched Ca(NO3)2 at 30 mg Se kg−1 is an effective method of application to increase the Se concentration in wheat grain to a level, 〉 100µg kg−1 dry matter, considered adequate for human consumption.
