Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Single exposure to aerosols of PCB's of different chlorine content (di-, tetra-, and pentachlorobiphenyls) caused an increase of liver lipids in rats. The extent of the lipid increase depended on the chlorine content of the applied PCB mixtures. As maximum effects (controls = 100%) of the di-, tetra-, and pentachlorobiphenyl the following values were found: 145, 160, 350% for cholesterol; 245, 345, 480% for triglycerides; 155, 150, 170% for phospholipids. After exposure to di- or tetrachlorobiphenyl, these levels were attained after 2–3 days and, with the exception of phospholipids, decreased subsequently up to the 7th day. The considerably higher concentrations following pentachlorobiphenyl application remained unchanged for a longer time and were still markedly increased after 14 days. The increase of the phospholipid content appeared to be due mainly to a proliferation of the endoplasmic reticulum. Further indications of liver cell hypertrophy were an increase in relative liver weight and RNA content.
