    Notes: Depuis l'ékpoque du Cercle de Vienne on consière l'explication en tant que tâche centrale de la philosophie analytique. Cependant il n'y a pas unanimité autour de la compréhension du concept d'explication. Dans cet article nous suggérons, tout en suivant Bachelard, de considérer une explication d'un concept en tant que sa généralisation propre dans le cadre d'une théorie explicative. Nous examinons notre approche en envisageant l'explication des concepts logiques («mplication»), mathématiques («ombre» et «ligne droite») et de la philosophie des sciences («réduction»).

    Notes: Summary Otto Neurath was one of the most active and prominent members of the Vienna Circle. However, after the war his philosophical influence has been rather limited. In this paper I want to show that the main theme of Neurath's philosophical work has been the formulation of a radically empiricist theory of science. His approach —encyclopedism — can be characterised by the following five theses: scientific knowledge is (1) fallible, (2) pluralistic, (3) holistic, (4) it can be logically systematizedonly locally, and (5) it does not give us a (faithful) description of the real world. (4) is considered as the most original thesis of encyclopedism and is discussed in detail. Neurath never fully elaborated his approach. However, the central features of encyclopedism can be reconstructed from Neurath's penetrating criticisms of Popper's falsificationism and Carnap's semantics. In both cases, his approach is based on a transformed Kantian motive, namely to map out the legitime limits of empiricist reason.

    Notes: Abstract Idealist Heresies in Philosophy of Science: Cassirer, Carnap, and Kuhn. As common wisdom has it, philosophy of science in the analytic tradition and idealist philosophy are incompatible. Usually, not much effort is spent for explaining what is to be understood by idealism. Rather, it is taken for granted that idealism is an obsolete and unscientific philosophical account. In this paper it is argued that this thesis needs some qualification. Taking Carnap and Kuhn as paradigmatic examples of positivist and postpositivist philosophies of science it is shown that these accounts share important features with Cassirer's idealist philosophy of science developed in the first half of this century. As it turns out, often Cassirer is more modern than those classical philosophers of (post)posivitist philosophy of science. For instance, Quine's criticism against Carnap's empiricist philosophy of science launched in Two Dogmas of Empiricism is anticipated by Cassirer for several decades.

    Notes: Abstract In the framework of set theory we cannot distinguish between natural and non-natural predicates. To avoid this shortcoming one can use mathematical structures as conceptual spaces such that natural predicates are characterized as structurally ‘nice’ subsets. In this paper topological and related structures are used for this purpose. We shall discuss several examples taken from conceptual spaces of quantum mechanics (‘orthoframes’), and the geometric logic of refutative and affirmable assertions. In particular we deal with the problem of structurally distinguishing between natural colour predicates and Goodmanian predicates like ‘grue’ and ‘bleen’. Moreover the problem of characterizing natural predicates is reformulated in such a way that its connection with the classical problem of geometric conventionalism becomes manifest. This can be used to shed some new light on Goodman's remarks on the relative entrenchment of predicates as a criterion of projectibility.

    Notes: Abstract The thesis of the empirical underdetermination of theories (U-thesis) maintains that there are incompatible theories which are empirically equivalent. Whether this is an interesting thesis depends on how the term ‘incompatible’ is understood. In this paper a structural explication is proposed. More precisely, the U-thesis is studied in the framework of the ‘model theoretic’ or ‘emantic’ approach according to which theories are not to be taken as linguistic entities, but rather as families of mathematical structures. Theories of similarity structures are studied as a paradigmatic case. The structural approach further reveals that the U-thesis is related to problems of uniqueness in the representational theory of measurement, questions of geometric conventionalism, and problems of structural underdetermination in mathematics.
