Abstract Microbial metabolism studies of crisnatol (1), a new DNA interca-lator, has resulted in the isolation and characterization of a major metabolite identified as the C-l hydroxylated crisnatol (2). The structure of the metabolite was established by comparison of its spectral data to that of crisnatol. Complete 13C-NMR assignments for crisnatol and its C-l hydroxylated metabolite were also made.
