Abstract In this paper, it is pointed out that when several natural frequencies of a structure are clustered in a narrow band the individual modal shapes are very hard to measure or calculate with acceptable accuracy, whereas the invariant subspace spanned by them can be easily determined. It is recommanded that the sine of the included angle of two subspaces of equal dimensions may be used as an index for measuring the difference of the subspaces. A simple method is proposed for calculating the cosine of the included angle.
