Notizen: During the last few years, improvements in control strategies became a necessity, with controls being targeted on material properties. The ever-increasing demand for polymer blends spells the need for in-line instrumentation capable of monitoring blend properties such as morphology. Since ultrasonics have proved to be sensitive to properties of multiphase materials, their performance for discriminating blend morphology was explored here. In-line and off-line (static, with no flow) ultrasonic measurements were made on different blends of polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) for various viscosity ratios, and over the entire range of composition. Blends were compounded on a ZSK-30 Werner & Pfleiderer intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder. In-line ultrasonic measurements were performed on both single-screw and twin-screw extruders. Ultrasonic properties (velocity and attenuation) were found to vary approximately linearly with composition. Mixing rules were evaluated for the description of ultrasonic behavior. For the attenuation measurements, the positive deviations from these rules were found significant. The additional attenuation was attributed to scattering generated by the presence of the minor phase inclusions.

Notizen: Commercial high density polyethylene and polyamide-6 (PA) resins were melt blended in the Brabender Plasticorder twin-screw extruder. The blends containing zero to 30 wt percent of polyamide-6 were examined in dynamic and steady state shear at 150, 200, and 250°C. The Theological test results are discussed in terms of morphology of the samples as observed under scanning electron microscope. Microscopy of the extrudates has shown a temperature dependent movement of the polyamide in the capillary during the extrusion and that fibrillation of the PA phase in the extensional field occurred at all temperatures.

Notizen: The effect of addition of an ethylene-propylene block polymer on rheological and mechanical properties of a linear-low-density polyethylene/polypropylene blend was examined. The samples were prepared by melt blending in a twin-screw extruder followed by injection molding. The single-, two- and three-component systems were treated the same way. The mechanical behavior of the blends was evaluated by means of tensile, and flexural, tests at 23 and -40°C. The capillary, elongational, and dynamic-flow measurements were performed at 190°C.

Notizen: This second paper of a series continues the examination of the tensile properties of two series of linear low density polyethylene/polypropylene, (LLDPE/PP) blends. The blends were prepared using a twin-screw extruder and cover the whole concentration range, An Instron Universal Tensile Tester was used to measure the tensile properties of the blends between 10 and 70°C, and the temperature and composition dependences of the modulus were examined. A comparison is established between the solid state and melt properties to underline the behavior in the PP rich region. Results of dynamic mechanical experiments and differential scanning calorimetry on the same materials are also given, and the mechanical behavior is discussed in terms of the variation of the system's crystallinity.
