Notes: Abstract Volume integrals of the imaginary part of the proton and the neutron optical potentials obtained from the existing phenomenological analyses for the mass number range of 12–209 and for a range of nucleon energies (E p =10–180 MeV,E n =8–150 MeV) have been fitted with an empirical expression. The isoscalar, the isovector and the Coulomb components determined empirically have been compared with those obtained from the microscopic approach. Though there is qualitative agreement between the two predictions, there are differences when compared quantitatively.

Notes: Abstract A one-parameter expression has been found which predicts with a smaller χ2 than previous expressions, the total reaction cross sections for a large number of heavy-ion systems covering a wide energy range. The expression uses an interaction radius which is a sum of the equivalent uniform matter radii of the interacting nuclei plus and energy-dependent term.

Notes: Abstract: The inclusive energy spectra of light charged particles, such as, α, p, d and t, evaporated from the hot 31P nucleus at an excitation energy E *∼ 60 MeV, have been measured at various angles. The compound nucleus 31P has been populated using two different entrance channel configurations; i.e., 7Li (47 MeV) + 24Mg and 19F (96 MeV) + 12C reactions, leading to the same excitation energy of the compound system. It has been observed that the spectra obtained in the 7Li (47 MeV) + 24Mg reaction follow the standard statistical-model prediction with a spherical configuration of the compound nucleus. But, the spectra obtained in the 19F (96 MeV) + 12C reaction deviate from similar predictions of the statistical model both on higher- as well as on lower-energy sides. Considerable deformation was required to be incorporated in the calculation in order to reproduce the measured-energy spectra in this case. Dynamical trajectory model calculations were not found to play any significant role in explaining the differences in behaviour between the two cases under study. The observed discrepancy has been attributed to the difference in the angular-momentum distributions of the compound nuclei formed in the two reactions.

Notes: Abstract: The fission fragment angular distributions have been measured for the system 19F +209Bi over a range of bombarding energies from 88.0 MeV to 125.6 MeV. The measured fission fragment anisotropies are in agreement with the saddle point statistical model calculations in the above energy range. Combining these data with those available for 11B, 12C, 14N, 16O and 18O +209Bi, 208Pb systems, it is concluded that the spherical target plus projectile systems behave “normal” from near- to above – barrier energies. This observation is in contrast to the “anomalous” anisotropies exhibited by the deformed actinide target – projectile systems at near – barrier energies.

Notes: Abstract  Using two-dimensional Mexican hat wavelets, digitized imagery from the flow visualization pictures of a mixing layer by Brown and Roshko have been analysed. The objective of the present study is to “calibrate” the proposed wavelet technique for educing structures in a flow whose large-scale organization is well established. It is found that, with appropriate thresholds on wavelet-transform coefficients, considerable insight into the structure of the flow at different scales can be obtained. In particular, the analysis reveals that the small-scale structure within the large-scale vortices is approximately homogeneous, and has characteristic scales that do not vary significantly with downstream distance.

Notes: Abstract The elastic scattering data of 35.4 MeV alpha particles from Zr-isotopes have been analysed using the optical model. Both the phenomenological and the folding model potentials have been employed in fitting the data with the optical model. The resultant systematics. concerning the volume integrals and the root mean square radii are summarized.

Notes: Abstract The data of fission fragment anisotropies measured for the system16O +209Bi in the centre of mass energy region of 73 to 95 MeV have been compared with the saddle point statistical model calculations. The corrections to the nuclear temperature and the spin distribution arising due to pre-fission neutron emission have been made. While the resultant calculations reproduce very well the data in the near- and sub-barrier energy regions, they deviate from the data at higher energies. This observation is similar to what was already reported for16O +208Pb system.

Notes: Abstract The fission fragment angular distributions for the system12C +232Th have been measured in the energy range 0.97〈Ec.m./VB〈1.22. The measured anisotropies have been compared with the predictions of the standard saddle point statistical model, using the second moment of the compound nucleus spin distribution 〈l2〉 deduced from a Wong model fit to the fission excitation function. While the measured anisotropies agree with the standard saddle point statistical model for Ec.m./VB〉1.05, they are abnormally large at lower energies. This is also true for the existing measurements of16O and19F +232Th systems. Since for this system pre-equilibrium fission contributions are not expected, this anomaly indicates strong channel coupling effects leading to an increase in 〈l2〉 at sub-barrier energies.
