Notes: Abstract Difficulty in resuscitating a neonate using bag and mask ventilation was followed by later episodes of apnoea and cyanosis. Intubation relieved the respiratory failure and revealed a large fleshy polyp obstructing the posterior pharynx. Computerised tomography showed there was no superior extension of the lesion and the polyp was removed completely on operation. Histological examination showed this lesion to be a dermoid or “Hairy Polyp”.

Notes: Abstract The structural and thermal properties of melt spun Al86Cr14−x Fe x , alloys have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis. Electron diffraction patterns indicate that all alloys contain quasicrystalline nodules with icosahedral symmetry in a matrix of f cc aluminium. Microscopically the alloys fall into two categories; those with x ⩽ 6 and those withx 〉 6. The first class alloys shows large (〉1μm) icosahedral crystallites with well defined dendritic crystallite growth and sharp quasicrystalline X-ray diffraction peaks. The latter alloys show quasicrystalline crystallites which are predominantly much smaller as well as considerably broadened X-ray diffraction peaks. Thermal analysis measurements indicate that the activation energy for crystallization in these alloys is about 1.5 eV.

Notes: Abstract Recent magnetisation measurements indicated the presence of ferromagnetism in Al−Cu−Mn−Ge quasicrystals with Tc∼535K. In this paper we report the room temperature Mossbauer and X-ray measurements of a series of ferromagnetic AlCuMnFeGe alloys.

Notes: Abstract The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique has been used to examine the precipitation process in the commercial Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy AA-7075. In general the results are in good agreement with previous DSC data on a similar alloy and can be related to the precipitation process observed by electron microscopy. However, an additonal precipitation process has been detected at low temperatures, which is usually masked by coarsening and dissolution of Guinier-Preston (G-P) zones formed during room-temperature ageing. This precipitate, which is referred to as the “precursor” to η′ after Lyman et al., does not redissolve on going to higher temperatures and is an important step in the ageing process in these alloys.

Notes: Abstract An aluminium superplastic alloy has been used as the matrix for a variety of fibre reinforcements. It is shown that, by hot pressing in the superplastic regime of the alloy, a number of different reinforcements can be incorporated into the matrix. Tensile tests on composites with up to 25 vol % of reinforcement showed good agreement with the rule of mixtures.

Notes: Abstract Microyield and plastic flow occurring in polycrystalline MgO prior to fracture at room temperature is examined. It is shown that the initial dislocation activity occurs in the region of grain boundaries at a stress independent of grain size and below the microyield stress. The microyield stress corresponds to the stress necessary for propagating slip across the grain diameter but is below the stress necessary to produce dislocation activity in adjacent grains. The microyield stress obeys a Petch type of relationship with respect to grain size and this is attributed to the variation of dislocation density with grain size. The fracture stress — grain size relationship also follows the Petch equation but indicates that extensive work hardening has occurred prior to fracture.

Notes: Abstract Acoustic emission has been used to investigate the fracture processs in Al2O3 and an Al2O3-Mo fibre composite. The acoustic emission data indicate extensive micro-fracturing at loads considerably less than that required to cause fracture in Al2O3. The acoustic emission emanating from the composite in the early stages of fracture is very similar to that observed in Al2O3. However, as final fracture is approached the acoustic emission profiles differ considerably. The acoustic emission profiles are discussed in terms of the fracture mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a new approach to improving the fatigue strength of sheet material by edge treatment. The improvement is achieved by inducing a compressive residual stress, by means of a mechanical procedure called edge dimpling, to a finite length along the edge. The new technique can be utilized to increase the fatigue resistance of plates with large-scale stress concentrations such as an unstressed access-door opening into a wing structure, stress concentrations at the corners of window doublers or long, wide slots in the structures.

Notes: Abstract Room temperature57Fe Mössbauer effect spectra of several Al-TM-Fe icosahedral quasicrystals are reported. Results of fits to discrete sites and to various distributions of quadrupole splittings are presented. Mean isomer shifts, $$\overline \delta $$ , and quadrupole splittings, Δ, are shown to be insensitive to the fitting procedure used. Trends in $$\overline \delta $$ and $$\overline \Delta $$ for the icosahedral phase may be indicative of a Hume-Rothery stabilization mechanism.
