    Notes: Bi2Sr2Ca0.64Cu1.64Ox (nominally Bi2212) powders were fabricated into powder-in-tube Ag- and Ag(7 at. % Cu)-sheathed tapes by cold and hot rolling to investigate the effects of sheath composition and rolling conditions on their microstructural development and superconducting properties. Bi2212 tapes with Ag(Cu) sheaths exhibited improved grain alignment and interfacial uniformity, as well as enhanced formation of the Bi-free phase (≈Sr7.5Ca6.5Cu14Ox), relative to the Ag-sheathed specimens. The hot-rolled Ag(Cu)-sheathed tapes displayed superior critical current densities (Jc), where magnetization Jcm=1.5×106 (H(parallel)c) and 4.6×105 A/cm2 (H⊥c) at T=5 K, H=1 T. Correspondingly, these specimens had transport critical current densities (Jct) of 6.7×104 A/cm2 (H(parallel)c) and 5.4×104 A/cm2 (H⊥c) at T=4.2 K, H=0 T and 2.2×104 A/cm2 (H(parallel)c) and 3.0×104 A/cm2 (H⊥c) at T=4.2 K, H=14 T. The chemical stability of the Ag(Cu) sheath regions during the partial melting process was also studied. Rapid oxidation of copper produced Cu2O precipitates in the sheath at 885 °C, and subsequently a Cu2O-free zone developed near the core/sheath interface. A theoretical analysis of Cu2O precipitate formation and decomposition during thermal processing is presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effects of magnetic alignment, heat treatment, and substrate interactions on the microstructural development and properties of YBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) thick films were studied. Aligned films were formed by vacuum filtrating a particulate suspension in a 7 T applied field. These films and nonaligned control films were fired on either platinum (Pt) foil or magnesium oxide (MgO) substrates to various maximum temperatures between 930 and 1040 °C. Optical microscopy revealed large differences in microstructural development between the various films. Aligned Y123 films fired on Pt foil exhibited the best microstructural properties. Via plasma emission spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy, approximately 0.1 wt % Pt was found distributed throughout the films fired on platinum, while negligible amounts of Mg were detected in the films fired on MgO substrates. Differential thermal analysis revealed that, in the presence of Pt, the peritectic temperature (1030 °C for pure Y123 in O2) is reduced 70 °C, thereby opening a substantial thermal processing window for partial melt assisted growth of textured Y123. SQUID measurements of magnetic hysteresis and Tc provided quantitative evidence that, relative to the films fired on MgO, those fired on Pt exhibited enhanced texture development [ΔM(Happ(parallel)c axis)/ΔM(Happ⊥c axis)=2.6 at 5 K, 1 T] and properties (Bean model Jc,m=5×104 A/cm2 at 5 K, 4 T) without degradation of the Tc characteristics.

    Notes: We have used composition depth profiling of polymer bilayers, based on nuclear reaction analysis, to determine miscibility, phase coexistence, and critical temperatures in mixtures of random olefinic copolymers of mean composition E1−x/EEx; here E is the ethylene group −(C4H8)−, EE is the ethylethylene group −[C2H3(C2H5)]−, and one of the copolymers is partially deuterated. The components in each binary mixture have different values x1,x2 of the EE fraction. Using a simple Flory–Huggins mixing model, our results enable us to extract an interaction parameter of the form χ(x1,x2,T)=A(x1,x2)/T, where for given x1,x2, A is a constant. Calculated binodals using this form fit our measured coexistence curves well, while allowing χ a weak composition dependence improves the fit further. Within the range of our parameters, our results suggest that in such binary polyolefin mixtures the interaction parameter increases roughly linearly with the extent of chemical mismatch expressed as the difference in degree of ethyl branching between the two components. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using nuclear reaction analysis, we have measured the enrichment by one of the components at the surface of a binary mixture of random olefinic copolymers, with components of monomer structure E1−x1EEx1 and E1−x2EEx2. Here E and EE are the linear ethylene and branched ethylethylene groups (C4H8) and [C2H3(C2H5)], respectively, and x represents the fraction of the EE group randomly distributed on the chains. We examined 12 different couples covering a range x=0.38–0.97. The mixtures, whose thermodynamic behavior was established in our earlier paper, were cast in the form of films on both a silicon and on a gold-covered silicon surface, and were investigated in the one-phase region of the binodal in the vicinity of the critical temperature. We find that it is always the more flexible component—the one with a shorter statistical step length, corresponding to the higher ethylethylene fraction (higher x)—that is enriched at the polymer/air surface. Within our resolution neither component is enriched at the polymer/solid interface. These results show clearly that enthalpic rather than entropic factors dominate the surface potential driving the surface enrichment. For two of the mixtures we determined the excess of the surface-preferred species as a function of mixture composition along an isotherm in the one-phase region of the binodal. A consistent description of our data in terms of a mean-field model is provided by including in the surface potential a term in the mixture composition gradient at the polymer surface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of level of arousal upon rate of habituation of the electrodermal orienting reflex (OR) was studied by having 20 tone stimuli presented while subjects were either standing or seated. The standing condition was characterized by both a higher heart rate (HR) and a greater frequency of spontaneous skin resistance responses (SRRs). Compared to standing subjects, subjects under the seated condition demonstrated more rapid habituation of the OR as indicated both by a greater decrement in SRR frequency from the first to the last block of trials and by a greater proportion of subjects who failed to respond to any of the last 10 trials. The rate of spontaneous SRRs appeared to parallel these differences in habituation of evoked responses. There were no differences between groups in skin conductance level (SCL), or in either amplitude or frequency of the evoked electrodermal response over the first few stimulus presentations. The results were interpreted as supporting the conclusion that heightened arousal level retards habituation of the OR.

    Notes: Levels of fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products have been measured by aspecific and sensitive radioimmunoassay for degradation fragment E (FgE) in pregnant patients. Maternal FgE levels rose from the 16th week reaching a plateau at the 36th week in normal pregnancy. There was no correlation between maternal FgE levels and maternal age, parity or the occurrence of perinatal asphyxia. A minority of patients (5 percent) with evidence of intrauterine growth retardation showed prolonged elevation of FgE levels.
