Notes: A monochromator has been developed for coronary angiography, comprising a single bent crystal of silicon in Laue transmission geometry. K spectra of laser irradiated solid tin and tantalum (Z=50 and 73, respectively) targets were measured. The high resolution crystal spectrometer resolve the Sn and Ta Kα doublets, allowing in a proof-of-principle experiment the absolute Kα photon numbers emitted by the source to be determined. The Ta Kα yield is measured as a function of the laser pulse energy, allowing an assessment to be made of the suitability of such sources for medical applications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The activation patterns of the psoas and iliacus muscles were investigated in 7 healthy adult subjects (4 men and 3 women) during a variety of motor tasks in standing, sitting and lying. Myoelectric activity was recorded simultaneously from the 2 muscles using thin wire electrodes inserted under guidance of high-resolution ultrasound. In general, both muscles were coactivated, albeit to different relative levels, particularly when hip flexor torque was required. Selective activation of the iliacus could, however, be seen to stabilize the pelvis in contralateral hip extension during standing. Psoas was found to be selectively involved in sitting with a straight back and in contralateral loading situations requiring stabilization of the spine in the frontal plane. During training exercises from a supine position, such as sit-ups, the contribution of the psoas and iliacus muscles could be varied by changing the range of motion as well as the position and support for the legs. Thus, the 2 anatomically different muscles of the iliopsoas complex were shown to have individual and taskspecific activation patterns depending on the particular demands for stability and movement at the lumbar spine, pelvis and hip.

Notes: SUMMARY 1. Rivers are linear ecosystems across landscapes with an effective transport of organisms, sediment and organic matter. Dispersal is studied mostly during single events and for single species, and there is little knowledge on how the drift of plant litter and propagules varies within and between years for entire communities.2. We used floating traps for collecting waterborne plant litter and propagules in a small boreal river over 2 years. We installed the traps at four different locations along the river, and emptied them at least once a week during the ice-free season. We analysed propagule content by sorting and identifying species and through germination tests on bare soil.3. In total, we recorded at least 54 taxa in the samples, and the highest density recorded in one sample was 5000 propagules per 100 g litter (dry weight). Large temporal variations in litter and propagule transport were revealed, both within and between years.4. The longitudinal pattern was consistent between years, with an increasing mass of litter and number of propagule taxa downstream. The results highlight the importance of the temporal and longitudinal dimensions in river management.

Notes: Flow cytometric analysis of splenocytes from mice infected with lymphocytic Choriomeningitis virus revealed marked and long-standing up-regulation of LFA-1 expression on CD8+, but not on CD4+ T cells. Appearance of CD8+ T cells with a changed expression of adhesion molecules reflected polyclonal activation and expansion which was demonstrated not to depend on CD4+ T cells or their products. Cell sorting experiments defined virus-specific CTL to be included in this population (LFA-1hiMEL-14lo), but since about 80% of splenic CD8+ T cells have a changed phenotype, extensive bystander activation must take place; this is indicated also by the finding that CD8+LFA-lhi cells transiently express several markers of cellular activation, e. g. transferrin receptor, IL-2Rα and β. Analysis of cells from the cerebrospinal fluid of mice infected intracerebrally showed that virtually all T cells present belonged to the CD8LFA-lhi subset and, correspondingly, the ligand ICAM-1 was found to be up-regulated on endothelial cells in the inflamed meninges. Preincubation of LCMV-primed donor splenocytes with anti-LFA-1 markedly inhibited the transfer of virus-specific delayed-type hypersensitivity to naive recipients. Together, these findings indicate that up-regulation of LFA-1 expression is a critical factor involved in directing activated CD8+ T cells to sites of viral infection.

Notes: In order to study estrogen effects on developing human neurons, we have established primary cultures of neurons and glia from 8–13-week human embryo cortex and spinal cord. The neuronal identity of the cultures was verified using the neuronal synaptic vesicle and neuronal endosomal membrane markers synaptotagmin, synapsin and synaptophysin, and the glial contribution to the mixed glial–neuronal cultures was verified using the glial marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). We here report expression of estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) in these cells using RT-PCR and sequencing, RNAse protection assay, immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting. We found that both neuronal and mixed glial–neuronal cultures expressed ERβ. Treatment with 17β-estradiol gave an increased expression of ERβ in both types of cultures. These results suggest that ERβ is expressed in fetal brain and thus may mediate effects of estrogen in the developing nervous system. Furthermore, the results suggest that expression of ERβ in fetal brain may be regulated by estrogen.

Notes: Coronavirus-induced common cold and allergen-induced rhinitis are characterized by nasal mucosal exudation of bulk blood plasma. The mucosal exudation process involves ‘flooding’ of the lamina propria with plasma-derived binding proteins and it is possible that subepithelial inflammatory cytokines and mediators may be moved by the exudate to the mucosal surface. In this study, we have analysed cytokine levels in nasal lavage (NAL) fluids from non-allergic subjects inoculated with coronavirus (n= 20) and from subjects with allergic (birch pollen) rhinitis subjected to additional allergen challenge (samples were obtained 35min post challenge) in the laboratory (n= 10). Ten of the 20 inoculated subjects developed common cold and 10 remained healthy. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), IL-4, and IL-6 were analysed in unprocessed NAL fluids using immunoassays. The subjects who developed common cold had increased NAL fluid levels of IFNγ (P 〈 0.05) that correlated well with the symptoms (P 〈 0.001). IFNγ did not increase in subjects with allergic rhinitis. IL-1β levels were similar in NAL fluids obtained from all inoculated subjects. In the subjects with allergic rhinitis NAL fluid levels of both IL-1β and GM-CSF were increased (P 〈 0.05). GM-CSF was not detected in common cold. IL-4 and IL-6 were not detectable in any of the NAL fluids. The present cytokines may not only emanate from superficial mucosal cells. By aiding plasma exudation subepithelial cytokines may potentially also be retrieved on the mucosal surface. Our study provides original in vivo data supporting the notion that a TH-1 profile of cytokines, notably IFNγ, is present in viral infection and further supporting the view that GM-CSF is an important cytokine in allergic airways disease.

Notes: Aims:  To estimate the incidence of hand eczema in dental technicians and to elucidate occupational risk factors. Methods:  This was a retrospective cohort study among former dental technician students (n = 2139). Controls comprised population controls (n = 2288) with similar distribution of age and sex as the dental technicians. A mail questionnaire asked for occurrence of hand eczema including age of onset, occupational exposure and use of protective gloves. The response rate was 58%(1210 dental technicians and 1316 controls answered the questionnaire). Results:  In dental technicians the incidence of hand eczema was 7.1 cases/1000 person years in males and 10.8 in females during acrylate-exposed time. In controls the incidence of hand eczema was 3.1 in males and 3.7 in females. The relative risk (RR) for males was 2.3 (95% CI 1.6–3.4) and for females 2.9 (95% CI 2.1–4.0). 48% of the dental technicians and 30% of the controls reported more than 10 hand-washings/day (p 〈 0.001). 80% of the dental technicians reported skin exposure to uncured acrylates, 14% daily. 87% had skin contact with grinding dust from acrylates, 42% daily. 38% used protective gloves when handling uncured acrylates, males 29%, females 48%(p 〈 0.001). 58% did not know for how long the normally used gloves protected the skin against uncured acrylates. Conclusions:  The risk of hand eczema is more than doubled in dental technicians. The work involves frequent and unprotected exposure to acrylates and wet work. Education regarding skin protection is important.

Notes: Stickleback males were implanted with Silastic capsules filled with 11-ketoandrostenedione or androstenedione at the end of the breeding season. 11-Ketoandrostenedione prevented the natural decline in secondary sexual characters and testes weight. It also completely inhibited the commencement of spermatogenesis, which normally takes place in late summer after having been quiescent during the breeding season. Androstenedione also exerted these effects, but to a lesser degree.
