Notes: Abstract A finite permutation group is cycle-closed if it contains all the cycles of all of its elements. It is shown by elementary means that the cycle-closed groups are precisely the direct products of symmetric groups and cyclic groups of prime order. Moreover, from any group, a cycle-closed group is reached in at most three steps, a step consisting of adding all cycles of all group elements. For infinite groups, there are several possible generalisations. Some analogues of the finite result are proved.

Notes: Abstract Atube of even orderq=2 d is a setT={L, $$\mathcal{L}$$ } ofq+3 pairwise skew lines in PG(3,q) such that every plane onL meets the lines of $$\mathcal{L}$$ in a hyperoval. Thequadric tube is obtained as follows. Take a hyperbolic quadricQ=Q 3 + (q) in PG(3,q); letL be an exterior line, and let $$\mathcal{L}$$ consist of the polar line ofL together with a regulus onQ. In this paper we show the existence of tubes of even order other than the quadric one, and we prove that the subgroup of PГL(4,q) fixing a tube {L, $$\mathcal{L}$$ } cannot act transitively on $$\mathcal{L}$$ . As pointed out by a construction due to Pasini, this implies new results for the existence of flat π.C 2 geometries whoseC 2-residues are nonclassical generalized quadrangles different from nets. We also give the results of some computations on the existence and uniqueness of tubes in PG(3,q) for smallq. Further, we define tubes for oddq (replacing ‘hyperoval’ by ‘conic’ in the definition), and consider briefly a related extremal problem.

Notes: Abstract We consider the following question: Given a family A of sets for which A-blocking sets exist, is it true that any bijection of the set of points which preserves the family of A-blocking sets must preserve A? Using a variet of techniques, we show that the answer is ‘yes’ in many cases, for example, when A is the family of subspaces of fixed dimension in a projective space, lines in an affine plane, or blocks of a symmetric design, but that it is ‘no’ for lines of an arbitrary linear space.

Notes: Abstract A dual blocking set is a set of points which meets every blocking set but contains no line. We establish a lower bound for the cardinality of such a set, and characterize sets meeting the bound, in projective and affine planes.
