Notes: [Auszug] IT is generally accepted that the catalytic activity of a semiconducting catalyst is strongly influenced by its electronic state and that there must exist some relation between the catalytic activity of the semiconducting catalyst and its electric conductivity1. Until recently, however, no ...

Notes: Abstract Helicobacter pylori is present in the antral region of the stomach in a majority of patients with gastritis type B. The specific mechanism whereby the organism participates in the development of disease remains uncertain. Since the organism is not invasive, we postulate thatH. pylori produces a chemoattractant that recruits inflammatory cells to the antral region of the stomach.H. pylori was grown under microaerophilic conditions at 37°C for 72 hr inBrucella broth containing 1% fetal bovine serum. Culture supernates were harvested after removal of organisms by centrifugation and filtration. The putative chemoattractant in culture supernates as well as that which might be present endogenously in the growth medium (negative control) was assayed against human neutrophils (PMN) in modified Boyden blind-well chambers using 3.0-μm membranes. We found thatH. pylori supernates are chemotactic and showed up to 130% activity when compared to the positive chemoattractant control (zymosan-activated serum, a source of C5a). Minimal activity was observed with virgin growth medium. The chemoattractant activity is proportional to the number of colony forming units (CFU) ofH. pylori. Preliminary characterization of the activity shows that the chemoattractant is stable in a boiling water bath for 15 min, activity is lost within 1 hr in acid or alkali, and the chemotactic factor has an approximate molecular weight of 8500 daltons. The factor has no amino-sugar and is negative for the lipid, A portion of lipopolysaccharide. The chemotactic factor may be related to the recruitment of PMN into the lamina propria of the stomach in patients with gastritis, and it may afford an additional target for design of unique therapeutic interventions in chronic gastritis.

Description / Table of Contents: The temperature dependence of the electric conductivity σ of several presintered (700-1200°C) and unsintered MgO/Cr2O3-mixed-pellets has been measured. The sintering has a specific influence on the shape of the log σ/composition-curves. Presintering at 1200°C yields a minimum of conductivity at a composition of about 1 MgO + 1.3 Cr2O3. The pellets have been investigated by chemical, microscopical and X-ray technics.Only the existence of one definite compound, MgCr2O4, has been established.

Description / Table of Contents: Effect of Li-Doping of MgO and Cr2O3 on the Kinetics of MgCr2O4 FormationIt was found that incorporation of Li-ions influences the rate of the spinel formation by the solid state reaction in a different way depending on which of the reacting oxides was doped with these ions.

Description / Table of Contents: The dependence of the electric conductivity of 1:1-mixtures between MgO and Cr2O3 on the conditions of the preceding sintering process has been investigated. The results are discussed in connection with additional chemical, x-ray, and other investigations.

Description / Table of Contents: The mechanism of the spinel formation from polycrystalline MgO and Cr2O3 is much more complicated than hitherto assumed. Following reaction steps occur: Covering of the surfaces of the MgO particles by Cr2O3; oxidation of surface Cr(III) to Cr(IV); reduction of the MgO · CrO2 being formed to Mg chromate(III).
