    Notizen: summary While evidence exists to support the effectiveness of splints on conditions involving the masticatory musculature, few research projects have examined the results of long-term splint wear. The purpose of this study was to examine the function of the masticatory system over a 2-month time period of splint wear. Young adult female miniature pigs were divided into three groups: a control (C) group that wore no intraoral splint, a control splint (CS) group that wore a splint increasing bite height, and a protrusive splint (PS) group that wore a splint increasing bite height and moving the mandible anteriorly. Splints were worn constantly. Fine-wire needle EMG was performed prior to splint delivery and at 1 and 2 months post-splint delivery. Bilateral superficial masseters and zygomaticomandibularis (ZM, equivalent to deep masseter) muscles were monitored during normal feeding. Absolute EMG output, percentage output, and cycle timing were unaffected by chronic splint wear. However, chewing coordination was significantly changed in the splinted groups in both sessions post-splint delivery relative to baseline readings and to the C group (P 〈 0·005). Trends indicate that the coordination of the PS group was more greatly altered than that of the CS group.

    Notizen: summary  Masticatory muscle contraction causes both jaw movement and tissue deformation during function. Natural chewing data from 25 adult miniature pigs were studied by means of time series analysis. The data set included simultaneous recordings of electromyography (EMG) from bilateral masseter (MA), zygomaticomandibularis (ZM) and lateral pterygoid muscles, bone surface strains from the left squamosal bone (SQ), condylar neck (CD) and mandibular corpus (MD), and linear deformation of the capsule of the jaw joint measured bilaterally using differential variable reluctance transducers. Pairwise comparisons were examined by calculating the cross-correlation functions. Jaw-adductor muscle activity of MA and ZM was found to be highly cross-correlated with CD and SQ strains and weakly with MD strain. No muscle's activity was strongly linked to capsular deformation of the jaw joint, nor were bone strains and capsular deformation tightly linked. Homologous muscle pairs showed the greatest synchronization of signals, but the signals themselves were not significantly more correlated than those of non-homologous muscle pairs. These results suggested that bone strains and capsular deformation are driven by different mechanical regimes. Muscle contraction and ensuing reaction forces are probably responsible for bone strains, whereas capsular deformation is more likely a product of movement.

    Notizen: Avian embryos can be completely paralyzed by injection of neuromuscular-blocking agents. We used a single injection of decamethonium iodide to paralyze embryos at 7, 8, or 10 days of incubation and analyzed the growth of individual bones (clavicle, mandible, ulna, femur, tibia, humerus) and of individual muscles that act upon some of those bones (clavicular and sternal heads of m. pectoralis, and mm. biceps brachii, depressor mandibulae, pseudotemporalis, and adductor externus). Growth of the bones is not equally affected by paralysis. Only 27% of clavicular growth (by mass) but 77% of mandibular growth occurred in paralyzed embryos, whereas the four long bones exhibited 52-63% of their normal growth. Analysis of muscle weight, fiber length and physiological cross-sectional area (weight/fiber length) indicate that there was greater reduction of the muscles acting on the limbs than of those acting on the mandible, i.e., diminished growth of the skeleton is correlated with reduced muscular activity. Specific retardation of clavicular growth is due to fusion of sternal rudiments and collapse of the thorax, as well as virtual absence of the musculature that normally attaches to the clavicle. We discuss these results in the light of intrinsic and extrinsic factors governing growth of tne embryonic skeleton. Paralysis reduces skeletal growth by reducing both the movements taking place in ovo, and the loads imposed on the bones by muscle contraction, changes that represent alterations in the mechanical environment of the skeleton.

    Notizen: Abstract Eggs of two small Australian lizards, Lampropholis guichenoti and Bassiana duperreyi, were incubated to hatching at 25 °C and 30 °C. Incubation periods were significantly longer at 25 °C in both species, and temperature had a greater effect on the incubation period of B. duperreyi (41.0 days at 25 °C; 23.1 days at 30 °C) than L. guichenoti (40.1 days at 25 °C; 27.7 days at 30 °C). Patterns of oxygen consumption were similar in both species at both temperatures, being sigmoidal in shape with a fall in the rate of oxygen consumption just prior to hatching. The higher incubation temperature resulted in higher peak and higher pre-hatch rates of oxygen consumption in both species. Total amount of oxygen consumed during incubation was independent of temperature in B. duperreyi, in which approximately 50 ml oxygen was consumed at both temperatures, but eggs of L. guichenoti incubated at 30 °C consumed significantly more (32.6 ml) than eggs incubated at 25 °C (28.5 ml). Hatchling mass was unaffected by either incubation temperature or the amount of water absorbed by eggs during incubation in both species. The energetic production cost of hatchling B. duperreyi (3.52 kJ · g−1) was independent of incubation temperature, whereas in L. guichenoti the production cost was greater at 30 °C (4.00 kJ · g−1) than at 25 °C (3.47 kJ · g−1). Snout-vent lengths and mass of hatchlings were unaffected by incubation temperature in both species, but hatchling B. duperreyi incubated at 30 °C had longer tails (29.3 mm) than those from eggs incubated at 25 °C (26.2 mm). These results indicate that incubation temperature can affect the quality of hatchling lizards in terms of embryonic energy consumption and hatchling morphology.
