Notes: A sustainable pulsating mode in peniotron backward wave oscillations can be excited if parameters are properly chosen, such that at some instant of time the reduction in beam energy resulting from the electron–wave interaction is to such an extent that its cyclotron harmonic line intersects with the waveguide dispersion curve in the positive kz region. The generation of the forward traveling self-oscillating mode eliminates the residual backward traveling wave, which is very essential in establishing relaxation oscillation. As a result, the time evolution of the output wave becomes self-pulsating. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The forward propagating absolute instability in peniotron interaction can be utilized to build forward wave oscillators. This is demonstrated by performing computer simulations which also reveal that the peniotron interaction is able to suppress the gyrotron interaction and attains the efficiency without the influence of the gyrotron mode.

Notes: Computer simulation results reveal that the superradiant modes in free-electron laser amplifiers with high gain and long interaction length tend to degrade the amplifier performance. If these modes are kept at low levels, the amplifier efficiency can be significantly improved. This observation can be employed to interpret the recent MIT reversed guide field free-electron laser experiment.

Notes: The performance of peniotron backward wave oscillators which utilize the axis-encircling beam generated by a combined solenoidal and wiggler magnetic field was investigated through computer simulations. The potential advantages of this new configuration are that it is capable of converting both beam longitudinal and transverse energy into radiation and reducing the severity of mode competition. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The performance of cyclotron autoresonance maser amplifiers can be significantly improved by using a properly spatially profiled helical wiggler. The proposed configuration is able to alleviate the severe problem of performance degradation by beam velocity spread. Simulation results show that more than 20% output efficiency can still be attained at 94 GHz, even with 5% beam velocity spread. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the initiation and evolution of phase separation in heteroepitaxial InAlAs films. In misfit-free InAlAs layers, cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (XSTM) reveals the presence of isotropic nanometer-sized clusters. For lattice-mismatched InAlAs layers with 1.2% misfit, quasiperiodic contrast modulations perpendicular to the growth direction are apparent. Interestingly, these lateral modulations are apparently initiated within the first few bilayers of film growth, and both the amplitude and wavelength of the modulations increase with film thickness. The saturation value of the modulation wavelength determined from XSTM coincides with the lateral superlattice period determined from (002) x-ray reciprocal space maps, suggesting that the lateral modulation wavelength represents a periodic composition variation. Together, these results suggest that phase separation in the heteroepitaxial InAlAs thin-film system is a misfit-driven kinetic process initiated by random compositional nonuniformities, which later develop into coupled compositional and surface morphological variations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have demonstrated a route to epitaxial Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 on (001) Si that exhibits a uniform piezoelectric response down to nanoscale levels through the utilization of an insulating, single-crystalline SrTiO3 transition layer. These structures, which were grown by a combination of molecular-beam epitaxy and off-axis magnetron sputtering, have a surface roughness of 〈5 Å, with piezoelectric microscopy measurements revealing a piezoelectric coefficient of ∼50 pm/V that is switchable down to sub-100-nm dimensions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A gyro-backward wave oscillator with its oscillation frequency close to the waveguide cutoff frequency has been experimentally demonstrated by other investigators to attain near 20% efficiency. Computer simulations have been carried out to elucidate the mechanisms which give rise to this high efficiency regime. The result shows that one of the plausible mechanisms is the resulting large frequency mismatch (detuning) which places the electron bunch in azimuthal phase close to where the maximum electron–wave coupling occurs.

Notes: It is demonstrated through computer simulations that a cyclotron autoresonance maser (CARM) amplifier with finite output pulse width operated in a high-order waveguide mode, such as the TE01 mode, is feasible. This is because the absolute instability grows from the initial beam noise fluctuation and takes a certain time interval to become disruptive to the desired amplification process. A drive wave with sufficiently high intensity can further reduce the growth rate of the absolute instability and prolong the stable amplification period.
