    Notes: Thermal oxides on p-type silicon carbide exhibit high densities of interface states and fixed charge. Understanding the effect of the oxide composition on the electrical properties is imperative to improve the quality of oxides on p-type silicon carbide. In this work, we use angle resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to profile the oxide composition. The result is a direct correlation between the carbon content in the oxide and the density of interface states and fixed charge as determined by electrical capacitance–voltage measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: It is recognized that tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), a pleiotropic cytokine, influences hormone secretion and transmitter release from central neurons. To examine the role of TNF-α as a modulator of autonomic function of the PNS, we measured [3H]norepinephrine ([3H]NE) secretion evoked by 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium iodide (DMPP), a nicotinic agonist, in cultures from neonatal rat superior cervical ganglia (SCG). We found that (1) DMPP-evoked [3H]NE secretion was enhanced in SCG mixed cultures treated for 48 h with recombinant human TNF-α (rhTNF-α) plus rat interferon-γ (IFN-γ) but not in cultures treated with either cytokine alone; (2) an increase in [3H]NE secretion was also observed in mixed cultures treated with recombinant murine TNF-α (rmTNF-α) alone; and (3) the presence of nonneuronal cells or soluble factors released by them was required for the effect of these cytokines on secretion. Electrophysiologic experiments revealed an increase in nicotinic receptor current density in neurons from mixed cultures treated with rhTNF-α plus IFN-γ or with rmTNF-α when compared with control cultures. We conclude that prolonged exposure to rhTNF-α plus IFN-γ or rmTNF-α regulates nicotinic responses in SCG cultures via a soluble factor or factors secreted by nonneuronal cells.

    Notes: A type of electrorheological (ER) system, denoted the magnetic materials-based electrorheological fluids, is introduced. The solid particles of this system are 40–50 μ-microspheres obtained by the sol–gel processing of a ferroelectric material containing a ferromagnetic component. Since the solid material is magnetic, the presence of a small magnetic field, such as that from a small permanent magnet, can suspend the microspheres in liquid. The incorporation of a small amount of magnetic materials thereby solves the long standing problem of particle sedimentation in ER fluids. It is found that this type of ER fluid is very stable and exhibits a strong ER effect at low electric field. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Pork quality is usually determined subjectively as PSE, PFN, RFN, RSE and DFD based on color, texture and exudation of the meat. In this study, a hyperspectral-imaging-based technique was developed to achieve rapid, accurate and objective assessment of pork quality. The principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise operation methods were used to select feature waveband from the entire spectral wavelengths (430 to 980 nm). Then the feature waveband images were extracted at the selected feature wavebands from raw hyperspectral images, and the average reflectance (R) was calculated within the whole loin-eye area. Artificial neural network was used to classify these groups. Results showed that PCA analysis had a better performance than that of stepwise operation for feature waveband images selection. The 1st derivative data gave a better result than that of mean reflectance spectra data. The best classified result was 87.5% correction. The error frequency showed that RSE samples were easier to classify. The PFN and PSE samples were difficult to separate from each other.

    Notes: Abstract As the basic unit of life, the cell is a biologically complex system, the understanding of which requires a combination of various approaches including biomechanics. With recent progress in cell and molecular biology, the field of cell mechanics has grown rapidly over the last few years. This review synthesizes some of these recent developments to foster new concepts and approaches, and it emphasizes molecular-level understanding. The focuses are on the common themes and interconnections in three related areas: (a) the responses of cells to mechanical forces, (b) the mechanics and kinetics of cell adhesion, and (c) the deformation of biomolecules. Specific examples are also given to illustrate the quantitative modeling used in analyzing biological processes and physiological functions.

    Notes: Summary Five legume seeds (kidney beans, green peas, black beans, lentil and pinto beans) were heated by infrared to a surface temperature of 140 °C. The changes in chemical composition, physical, mechanical and functional properties of the processed seeds were measured and compared to those of the raw seeds. Significant changes in the properties of the seeds in terms of increased volume, lower rupture point and toughness, higher water uptake and higher leaching losses (when the seeds were soaked in water) were obtained. The changes in the physical and mechanical properties were attributed to possible cracking of the seed. Even though trypsin inhibitor activity was reduced, infrared heating did not significantly affect the starch and protein components of the seeds. The functional characteristics of flour from the infrared-heated seeds were superior to those of flour from untreated seeds.

    Notes: Silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires were synthesized at 900°C by the laser ablation technique. The growth morphology, microstructure, and defects in SiC nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The Raman scattering study indicated that the Raman peaks corresponding to the TO and LO phonon modes of the SiC nanowires had larger red shifts compared to those of bulk SiC material. The red shift, broadening peak, and the asymmetry of the Raman peak could be explained by the size confinement effect in the radial and growth directions. The growth mechanism of SiC nano-wires was discussed based on the vapor–liquid–solid reaction.

    Notes: The variegated leaves of the Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) species Agave americana have a large central longitudinal green band with narrow yellow bands on either side. The yellow bands had 97% less pigment content, 84% lower ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity, but only 20% lower phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity than the green band. The green bands exhibited gas exchange typical of CAM plants, with most CO2 uptake occurring at night, leading to a daily net CO2 uptake of 127 mmol m−2 day−1. The yellow bands had some nighttime net CO2 uptake but a larger loss during the daytime, indicating that they were sink tissues. Nocturnal citrate and malate accumulations for the yellow bands were 65 and 75%, respectively, of those of the green bands; sucrose supported 64-83% of their nocturnal acid accumulation. This is the first evidence that agaves, which are malic-enzyme-type CAM plants, use sucrose as the carbon source for nocturnal acid accumulation. About 44% of the carbon demand of the yellow bands can be supplied by sucrose diffusing via the symplast from the adjacent green band, about 25% from fructose and glucose diffusion, and some via the apoplast.
