Notizen: Multiple objective programming provides a means of aiding decision makers facing complex decisions where trade-offs among conflicting objectives must be reconciled. Interactive multiobjective programming provides a means for decision makers to learn what these trade-offs involve, while the mathematical program generates solutions that seek improvement of the implied utility of the decision maker. A variety of multiobjective programming techniques have been presented in the multicriteria decision-making literature. This study reviews published studies with human subjects where some of these techniques were applied. While all of the techniques have the ability to support decision makers under conditions of multiple objectives, a number of features in applying these systems have been tested by these studies. A general evolution of techniques is traced, starting with methods relying upon linear combinations of value, to more recent methods capable of reflecting nonlinear trade-offs of value. Support of nonlinear utility and enhancing decision-maker learning are considered.

Notizen: There have been a number of multiattribute decision aids developed to aid selection problems. Multiattribute value theory and the analytic hierarchy process are two commonly used techniques. Different systems can result in radically different conclusions if they inaccurately and inconsistently reflect the preference structure of decision makers, or if they are based on inappropriate theoretical models. This study examines the impact of the underlying theoretical model, the method in which preference information is elicited, and the structure of alternatives as influences on the results from using various decision aids. It was found that two systems based on the multiattribute value theory model were just as diverse in their conclusions as were results between AHP and the multiattribute value theory models. Therefore, accuracy of information reflecting decision maker preference is an important consideration. Feedback capable of assuring the decision maker that information provided is consistent is a necessary feature required of decision aids applied to selection problems. The study also found that the way in which information is elicited influenced the result more than did the underlying model. Exact numerical data for complex concepts such as attribute importance and alternative performance on attributes is not necessary, and elicitation procedures that are more natural for the user are likely to be more accurate.

Notizen: Purpose - Globalization and digitalization have led to the need for a different view of international business. Computer technology, especially in the form of enterprise systems, presents the opportunity to apply best (or at least better) practices. Twentieth century enterprise systems were focused on internal optimization. Twenty-first century enterprise systems need to be much more open, and to focus on the demand chain, driven by serving customers better. To better fulfill this need, this paper aims to present a method for evaluation of business process alternatives focusing on demand chain needs. Design/methodology/approach - A method integrating decision making and system approach principles is presented that includes use of soft systems approaches to identify goals and interrelationships among system parts, generation of alternatives, analysis of alternative performance on goals, refining alternatives to better satisfy goals, and multiple criteria selection analysis to recommend choice. Findings - The method is demonstrated on a small business process design. This process can allow broader consideration of organizational goals and focus on customer demands. Originality/value - The paper demonstrates how such a method might work to better support the design of enterprise systems in this dynamic new environment.

Notizen: Purpose - To discuss relative advantages and disadvantages of internally operated ERP- and ASP-delivered ERP functionality, and present the possible future of these alternatives. Design/methodology/approach - A thorough review of recent published papers dealing with advantages and disadvantages of ERP and ASP is presented. A good balance of theoretical analysis and real-world application examples of ERP and ASP is maintained. Some of the disadvantages were discussed from the managerial perspective. Based on these approaches, the possible future direction of ERP and ASP is explored. Findings - Today, organizations need ERP functionality to cope with the increasing complexity and competitive forces in the environment. Thus, ERP- and ASP-delivered ERP systems are widely applied, often with disappointing consequences. The choice that organizations must make should be based on a thorough review of the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative vis-à-vis corporate strategies and resources. Research limitations/implications - A good managerial overview of ERP and ASP for enterprise solutions. Discussion is based on the managerial perspective of the roles of ERP in organizations. Originality/value - This paper focuses on the weaknesses of ERP and ASP rather than glorifying their functions.

Notizen: Abstract Network models are attractive because of their computational efficiency. Network applications can involve multiple objective analysis. Multiple objective analysis requires generating nondominated solutions in various forms. Two general methods exist to generate new solutions in continuous optimization: changing objective function weights and inserting objective bounds through constraints. In network flow problems, modifying weights is straightforward, allowing use of efficient network codes. Use of bounds on objective attainment levels can provide a more controlled generation of solutions reflecting tradeoffs among objectives. To constrain objective attainment, however, would require a side constrained network code, sacrificing some computational efficiency for greater model flexibility. We develop reoptimization procedures for the side constrained problem and use them in conjunction with simplex-based techniques. Our approach provides a useful tool for generating solutions allowing greater decision maker control over objective attainments, allowing multiobjective analysis of large-scale problems. Results are compared with solutions obtained from the computationally more attractive weighting technique. Reoptimization procedures are discussed as a means of more efficiently conducting multiple objective network analyses.

Notizen: Abstract We describe a case of pedunculated hypopharyngeal lipoma with radiographic and endoscopic correlation. This 66-year-old man presented with 3 years of intermittent dysphagia for solids and unrelated episodes of coughing. The literature regarding benign pedunculated polyps of the hypopharynx and proximal esophagus is reviewed. The clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and recommended therapy for these unusual lesions are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Regional economic planning presents a challenge to local government administrators and planners. One of the most difficult aspects of regional planning is the treatment of multiple and sometimes conflicting goals. This paper presents a multicriteria modeling approach for regional planning. More specifically, it presents goal programming models for a typical regional planning problem which involves multiple projects, revenue sources, and priorities for goals.
