Notes: The purpose of this article is to illustrate the use of multiple discriminant analysis in those cases in which all discriminating variables are qualitative. The authors will show that an appropriate qualitative variable discriminant analysis model is a reformulation of the Bayesian decision theoretic model. Rules for the use of multiple discriminant analysis also are suggested for the cases in which some variables are qualitative and some are measurable on at least an interval scale. The qualitative variable discriminant analysis model is illustrated as an appropriate device for selecting a product version that will minimize a manufacturer's risk of product introduction.

Notes: Spectral analysis can be used to determine the general class of forecasting models which should be considered for purposes of generating forecasts of a marketing time series. Power spectral estimates and cross-spectral estimates can aid in selecting the most appropriate model when several variations of the predetermined class are under consideration.

Notes: The main focus of this article is to compare utility functions derived by the Von Neumann-Morgenstern conceptual apparatus with those imputed through actual pricing behavior. The study is cast in a competitive bidding setting in the oil drilling industry. A version of the Friedman bidding model is used to generate separate bidding models for two drilling contractors. From the actual bids submitted by the contractors and those generated by the model, one can construct each contractor's imputed utility function. An examination of a contractor's derived and imputed utility functions over a common range of outcomes then provides a diagnostic check on the veracity of the Von Neumann-Morgenstern theory as a prescriptive model of executive behavior.

Notes: A statistical test is presented to detect the presence of a Poisson input source into a queueing system. The fact that the arrival times of a Poisson input source are distributed independently and uniformly over time is used in conjunction with the central limit theorem to develop a test, based on the sum of the arrival times over a given interval of time, for the hypothesis that an input source into a queueing system is Poisson. Failure to reject this hypothesis gives one an extra degree of assurance that traditional queueing models assuming a Poisson input are applicable.
