    Notes: The problem of assigning frequencies to mobile radio telephones and the problem of assigning green light times to traffic streams at an intersection both deal with the assignment of a set S(x) to each vertex x of a graph G. The frequency assignment problem is concerned with set colorings: S(x) and S(y) are disjoint if x and y are joined by an edge. The traffic light phasing problem is concerned with set phasings: S(x) and S(y) are disjoint if x and y are not joined by an edge. This paper obtains some results on the existence and minimum size of set colorings and phasings under special restrictions on the sets S(x), for example, that each S(x) is a real interval or a set of n integers, or a set with at least a certain number of elements. Some of these results extend recent work on the n-tuple chromatic number. Finally, the set phasing and coloring problems are related to the problem of assigning sets S(x) to vertices of a graph so that S(x) and S(y) overlap if and only if x and y are joined by an edge. Results about existence and minimum size of such set assignments are given.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years, methods of consensus, developed for the solution of problems in the social sciences, have become widely used in molecular biology. Westudy a method of consensus originally due to Watermanet al. (Waterman, Galas and Arratia. 1984. Pattern recognition in several sequences: consensus and alignment.Bull. math. Biol. 46, 515–527) which is used to identify patterns or features in a molecular sequence where a pattern can vary in position within a given window. We show that some well-known consensus methods of the social sciences, the median and the mean, are special cases of this method for certain choices of the parameters used in it and give a precise account of the parameters for which these special cases arise. We also show that the specific parameters used in the method of Watermanet al. make their method equivalent to the median procedure which is widely used in the social sciences.

    Notes: Abstract Three different approaches to mixture axioms have been used in expected utility theories. The most general approach uses the decision maker's indifference relation in the mixture axioms. We show how this approach can be used to obtain general axiomatizations for the traditional linear utility form and for a recently developed multilinear utility form.

    Notes: Abstract Often the preferences of decision-makers are sufficiently inconsistent so as to preclude the existence of a utility function in the classical sense. Several alternatives for dealing with this situation are discussed. One alternative, that of modifying classical demands on utility functions, is emphasized and described in the context of the theory of measurement developed in recent years by behavioral scientists. The measurement theory approach is illustrated by discussing the concept of the dimension of a partial order. Even if we cannot assign numerical utility or worth values which reflect preferences in the classical utility function sense, from the measurement theory point of view we can still learn a lot about the preferences by finding several measures of worth so that a given alternative x is preferred to an alternative y if and only if x is ranked higher than y on each of the worth scales. If such measures can be found, it follows that the preferences define a partial order, and the smallest number of such scales needed is called the dimension of the partial order. If one-dimensional preferences (those amenable to classical utility assignments) cannot be found, then the next best thing is to search for partially ordered preferences with as small a dimension as possible. Several conditions under which a partial order is two-dimensional are described.
