Notes: Summary The thermal stability of some model compounds for polyvinylchloride with different types of structural defects was studied. The determinations were carried out in thermal dynamical conditions using the conductometric detection of the evolved hydrogen chloride and thermogravimetrical methods. The kinetic parameters corresponding to the first stages of dehydrochlorination reaction were discussed comparatively. The following thermal stability order was obtained: macromodels withHT 〉 macromodels with ClT 〉 macromodels with ClA.

Notes: Aqueous and DMF-diluted solutions of polyurethane ionomers with sodium propanesulfonated groups at urethanic nitrogen atoms were studied by viscometry. A polyelectrolyte effect was evidenced at temperatures between 25 and 60°C, and it was preserved when NaCl was added to solutions. The coulombic interactions between charged groups and a tendency to aggregation in separated domains (favoured by specific molecular architecture of polymers) explain the observed solution properties.

Notes: Poly(vinyl chloride) of low molecular weight (the fraction extracted with a hexane/acetone mixture (vol.-ratio 3:2)) was substituted by hydroxyphenyl groups and then analyzed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. It was established that the 1H NMR spectra of hydroxyphenyl substituted poly(vinyl chloride) prepared by removal of HCl, allows to determine the number of unsaturated end groups and to distinguish between the structures —CHCl—CH2—CH=CH—CH2Cl and —CH2—CHCl—CH=CH—CH2Cl, and even between their trans and cis forms. In addition the 1H NMR spectra of hydroxyphenyl substituted poly(vinyl chloride) prepared without removal of HCl allow to determine the total number of unsaturated end groups.

Notes: A water soluble ionomer with natrium propanesulfonate groups was prepared based on a linear polyurethane with high content of —NHCOO— structures. This compound was used both as macromolecular electrolyte and dopant ion in electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, obtaining a molecular level polypyrrole-propanesulfonate polyurethane composite with electroconductive properties. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The chemical modification of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in reaction with phenol, in the absence of a catalyst and at temperatures within the range of 60°C and the boiling temperature of phenol (180°C), led to the reaction products with the general structure of a vinyl chloride-vinyl phenol copolymer. The synthesized polyphenols were thermally characterized using the following experimental techniques: thermo-optical analysis (TOA), thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and pyrolysis in combination with gas chromatography (P-GC). The PVC samples modified with phenol show a thermal stability lower than the original PVC sample. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) increase with increased degree of chlorine substitution. The main pyrolysis products of the modified PVC samples are hydrocarbons with low boiling points (C1-C4), benzene, toluene, naphthalene, indan, and phenol. The semiquantitative estimation of the pyrolysis products of the synthesized samples led to the conclusion that the following structural element types can be present, statistically distributed along the chain: vinyl chloride and vinyl phenol units, acetylenic and ethylenic units, and indan type structures. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The polymerization of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), head-to-head macroradical plays an essential role in the formation of branches and the appearance of interruption processes that lead to labile unsaturated end groups. A reaction mechanism is suggested to explain these processes and the method of formation of internal double bonds as a result of transfer to polymer. The transfer to monomer can occur only by atom acceptance by the macroradical and not by the monomer giving up an atom.
