Notes: Berberine, is an alkaloid from Hydrastis canadensis L., Chinese herb Huanglian, and many other plants. It is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine as an antimicrobial in the treatment of dysentery and infectious diarrhea. This manuscript describes cardiovascular effects of berberine and its derivatives, tetrahydroberberine and 8-oxoberberine. Berberine has positive inotropic, negative chronotropic, antiarrhythmic, and vasodilator properties. Both derivatives of berberine have antiarrhythmic activity. Some of cardiovascular effects of berberine and its derivatives are attributed to the blockade of K+ channels (delayed rectifier and KATP) and stimulation of Na+-Ca2+ exchanger. Berberine has been shown to prolong the duration of ventricular action potential. Its vasodilator activity has been attributed to multiple cellular mechanisms. The cardiovascular effects of berberine suggest its possible clinical usefulness in the treatment of arrhythmias and/or heart failure.

Notes: Summary:  Many innate immune mechanisms are conserved throughout the animal kingdom. Manduca sexta, a widely used model for insect biochemical research, employs these mechanisms to defend against invading pathogens and parasites. We have isolated from M. sexta hemolymph a group of proteins (hemolin, peptidoglycan recognition proteins, β-1,3-glucan recognition proteins, and C-type lectins), which serve as a surveillance mechanism by binding to microbial surface molecules (e.g. peptidoglycan, lipopolysaccharide, lipoteichoic acid, and β-1,3-glucan). The binding triggers diverse responses such as phagocytosis, nodule formation, encapsulation, melanization, and synthesis of anti-microbial peptides/proteins. Some of these responses are mediated and coordinated by serine proteinase cascades, analogous to the complement system in mammals. Our current research is focused on the proteolytic activation of prophenoloxidase (proPO) – a reaction implicated in melanotic encapsulation, wound healing, and protein cross-linking. We have isolated three proPO-activating proteinases, each of which requires serine proteinase homologs as a cofactor for generating active phenoloxidase. The proteinases and proteinase-like molecules, containing one to two clip domains at their amino-terminus, are acute-phase proteins induced upon an immune challenge. Inhibitory regulation of the proteinases by serpins and association of the proteinase homologs with a bacteria-binding lectin are important for ensuring a localized defense response. Additional serine proteinases expressed in M. sexta hemocytes and fat body have been discovered. Future research efforts will be aimed at elucidating the proteinase cascade for proPO activation and investigating the roles of proteinases in other immune responses such as processing of plasmatocyte-spreading peptide.

    Notes: CaRAlO4 (R = Nd, Sm, Y) ceramics with a K2NiF4 structure were prepared by a solid-state reaction approach, and their microwave dielectric characteristics were evaluated, along with their microstructures. Dense CaNdAlO4, CaSmAlO4, and CaYAlO4 ceramics were obtained by sintering at 1425°–1500°C in air for 3 h, and good microwave dielectric characteristics were achieved: (1) ɛ= 18.2, Qf= 17 980 GHz, τf=−52 ppm/°C for CaNdAlO4; (2) ɛ= 18.2, Qf= 51 060 GHz, τf=−3 ppm/°C for CaSmAlO4; and (3) ɛ= 18.9, Qf= 39 960 GHz, τf= 6 ppm/°C for CaYAlO4.

Notes: The effects of Nd2Ti2O7 additive on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 8-mol%-yttria-doped fully stabilized zirconia (8Y-FSZ) ceramics were investigated. The Nd2Ti2O7 secondary phase was able to coexist with the 8Y-FSZ matrix, and the fracture toughness of the 8Y-FSZ ceramics was significantly improved by the Nd2Ti2O7 addition.

Notes: Ultrafine grain WC hardmetals were manufactured successfully from mixed powders ofnominal composition of WC-6Co-1.5Al(wt%). To manufacture bulk ultrafine grain WC alloys, nanocrystalline WC powders as precursor were prepared for sintering from the mixed commerciallyavailable powders by high energy milling of 15 h. Then the electrical current sintering process ofthe milled powders was further studied. Experimental results showed that the density, hardness andtransverse rupture strength of the sintered alloys reached 14.224 g/cm3, HRA 94 and 1660 MPa,respectively, by a appropriate coupling of pulse- and subsequent constant-current sintering and withthe total sintering time of 6 min. It seemed difficult to obtain desirable sintered hardmetal by asingle type of electric current sintering. However, the application of intensive pulse electric currentwas favorable to sintering, although it was difficult to achieve good WC alloys only by the pulseelectric current sintering. A higher density WC alloy could be prepared by enlarging the electriccurrent when only constant electric current was applied to sinter the milled powders. Unfortunately, the WC grains substantially coarsened concurrently so that the mechanical properties of the assintered alloy decreased obviously

Notes: In this paper, the mechanism, characteristics and categories about corrosion of offshoreengineering equipments are investigated. Some of selected advanced surface engineering techniquesfor corrosion control are introduced. On account of particularity of oceanic environment andperformance requirements for the equipments, the paper proposes corresponding anticorrosionmeasures for offshore engineering equipments. And as a tentative study on surface engineeringmanagement & analysis, the paper presents a scenario of anticorrosion design from the viewpoint ofSystem Engineering, including preparation, storage and conveyance of anticorrosion materials, aswell as R&D, operation, and management of anticorrosion facilities. It is expected that advanced surface engineering techniques used in anticorrosion can helpoffshore engineering equipments with good viabilities, perfect performances, low rate of failure, longlife-time and high rate of readiness. Anticorrosion design of offshore engineering equipments is of farreaching importance not only to develop our Advanced Manufacturing Technology facing towards21st century but also to implement sustainable development of our national economy, as well as to ournational economy strength

Notes: Constant current plus pulse current electrical sintering was introduced into the sinteringof a ball-milled nanocrystalline Fe-2Cu-2Ni-1Mo-0.8C mixed powder. Effect of pulse currentcharging time on the properties of sintered products was studied. Constant electric current sinteringwas also used for comparison. A nanostructured iron-based material was obtained within 4 minutesof sintering. It has a density of 7.7 g/cm3 (relative density of 98.7 %) with an average grain size(iron-matrix) of 58 nm and carbide particle size of less than 100 nm, a hardness of HRC 64 andtransverse rupture strength of 2004 MPa. When only pulsed electric current sintering was used witha sintering time of 5 min, a fine grained iron-base material with density of 7.74 g/cm3 (relativedensity of 99.2%), a hardness of HRC 65 and transverse rupture strength of 2045 MPa was obtained

Notes: Wavelet denoising method was introduced to improve the validity of identifying the guiderail irregularity in elevator. The horizontal acceleration signal measured from a test elevator wasprocessed by wavelet denoising. Then the denoised signal was decomposed up to four levels usingDaubechies 4 mother wavelet to identify the guide rail irregularity. The results indicate that theimpulses due to the guide rail irregularity are prominent in wavelet decompositions. And the causesresulting in those characteristics of the vibration signal can be well revealed. So discrete wavelettransform (DWT) can be used as an effective tool for denoising the horizontal vibration signal ofelevator and diagnosing faults in the guide rail
