    Notes: The application of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to three thermally labile phenylurea pesticides is reported. Using alcohols as solvents the decomposition of the pesticides is followed by a reaction in which esters of N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)carbamic acid are formed. As these reactions occur during the gas chromatographic analysis, it is the esters which are identified in the mass spectrometer. The methyl ester is itself a pesticide so an erroneous conclusion about the original pesticide could be reached when methanol is the solvent.

    Notes: Despite the presence of the ions at m/z 242 and m/z 243 in the electron ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) mass spectra of tetryl, respectively, no such daughter ions were observed in the collision-induced dissociation spectra of the M+· ion in EI and of the [M+H]+ ion in CI. This supports the thesis that these ions are formed through hydrolysis of tetryl to N-methylpicramide in the ion source before ionization. It was found that the hydrolysis is considerably stronger under CI consitions, but can be minirnized in EI. The structure of the molecular ion at m/z 242 in the EI mass spectrum of N-methylpicramide was found to be similar to that of the [MH-NO2]+ ion in the CI mass spectrum of tetryl.

    Notes: The fragmentation pathways of RDX in chemical ionization mass spectrometry have been rationalized, using data from different reagent gases, including CD4 and iso-C4D10. The dependence of spectra taken with different gases on the acid strength of the reactant ions in the gases is accounted for.
