Notes:
This article describes a novel approach to gas detection. A low-powered diode laser is used to produce a hot spot on the surface of a thin film. When oxygen is present, specific reaction with the film occurs, and a reaction site is formed. The altered optical character of the site is detected and is representative of the oxygen concentration.
