Notizen: A review and reinterpretation of previous experimental data on the deformation of partially melted crustal rocks reveals that the relationship of aggregate strength to melt fraction is non-linear, even if plotted on a linear ordinate and abscissa. At melt fractions, Φ 〈 0.07, the dependence of aggregate strength on Φ is significantly greater than at Φ 〉 0.07. This melt fraction (Φ = 0.07) marks the transition from a significant increase in the proportion of melt-bearing grain boundaries up to this point to a minor increase thereafter. Therefore, we suggest that it is the increase of melt-interconnectivity that causes the dramatic strength drop between the solidus and a melt fraction of 0.07. We term this drop the ‘melt connectivity transition’ (MCT). A second, less-pronounced strength drop occurs at higher melt fractions and corresponds to the breakdown of the solid (crystal) framework. This is the ‘solid-to-liquid transition’ (SLT), corresponding to the well known ‘rheologically critical melt percentage’. Although the strength drop at the SLT is about four orders of magnitude, the absolute value of this drop is small compared with the absolute strength of the unmelted aggregate, rendering the SLT invisible in a linear aggregate strength v. melt-fraction diagram. On the other hand, the more important MCT has been overlooked in previous work because experimental data usually are plotted in logarithmic strength v. melt-fraction diagrams, obscuring large strength drops at high absolute strength values. We propose that crustal-scale localization of deformation effectively coincides with the onset of melting, pre-empting attainment of the SLT in most geological settings. The SLT may be restricted to controlling flow localization within magmatic bodies, especially where melt accumulates.

Notizen: Introduction:  Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a major glycosaminoglycan component of normal dermis and a major component of the matrix synthesized during wound healing. Previous studies have shown that uncrosslinked HA is rapidly degraded and cleared in vivo, limiting its clinical utility. We have used a novel HA hydrogel scaffold that is crosslinked for prolonged bioavailability. It has a porous interior and a smooth surface. This scaffold can also be fabricated with collagen and linked to proteins or DNA to direct cell growth and differentiation. We hypothesized that this novel HA formulation might itself improve wound healing by enhancing cell migration.Purpose:  The present study explored the effects of a crosslinked HA hydrogel on wound healing. Methods:  Using an established model of wound healing, four 7 mm punch wounds were made on each ear of New Zealand rabbits. Each wound was immediately treated with topical application of one of the following: HA hydrogel (n = 26), HA/collagen hydrogel (n = 27), or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)(n = 16). Wounds were harvested on day 8 for histologic evaluation. Sections were examined for epithelial and granulation tissue ingrowth into wounds. Results:  HA- and HA/collagen-treated wounds showed statistically significant increases in epithelial (p = 0.003 and p = 0.007, respectively) and granulation tissue ingrowth (p = 0.004 and p = 0.01, respectively) when compared to PBS-treated controls. Conclusions:  In the rabbit ear ulcer model, the application of crosslinked HA and HA/collagen hydrogels accelerated wound healing as measured by epithelial and granulation tissue ingrowth.Funding Source: NIH grant: 5R01GM063825–03

Notizen: Abstract:  Some monothematic types of delusions may arise because subjects have unusual experiences. The role of this experiential component in the pathogenesis of delusion is still not understood. Focussing on delusions of alien control, we outline a model for reality testing competence on unusual experiences. We propose that nascent delusions arise when there are local failures of reality testing performance, and that monothematic delusions arise as normal responses to these. In the course of this we address questions concerning the tenacity with which delusions are maintained, their often bizarre content, the patients’ inability to dismiss them, and their often circumscribed character.

Notizen: The fluid mechanics of artificial blood pumps has been studied since the early 1970s in an attempt to understand and mitigate hemolysis and thrombus formation by the device. Pulsatile pumps are characterized by inlet jets that set up a rotational "washing" pattern during filling. Strong regurgitant jets through the closed artificial heart valves have Reynolds stresses on the order of 10,000 dynes/cm2 and are the most likely cause of red blood cell damage and platelet activation. Although the flow in the pump chamber appears benign, low wall shear stresses throughout the pump cycle can lead to thrombus formation at the wall of the smaller pumps (10Đ??50 cc). The local fluid mechanics is critical. There is a need to rapidly measure or calculate the wall shear stress throughout the device so that the results may be easily incorporated into the design process.

Notizen: BACKGROUND: Nodular vasculitis is a disorder that can be associated with several disease states, including infection, medications, malignancy, and collagen vascular disorders. The pathogenesis is unknown, but may be related to immune complex deposition, leading to subsequent vascular damage. METHODS: We report a case of nodular vasculitis occurring in a 40-year-old African-American woman with end-stage liver disease and a 3 month history of ulcerating lesions on her lower extremities. Although these lesions were both clinically and histologically consistent with erythema indratum, all studies directed at determining a mycobacterial etiology were negative. RESULTS: Biopsy of the skin lesions revealed a neutrophil-predominant vasculitis in the setting of a lobular panniculitis. The histopathology of the liver biopsies, and the patient’s clinical course were consistent with auto-immune cholangitis. A course of oral prednisone was initiated, which resulted in improvement of the lower extremity lesions. CONCLUSION: In this case report we document a case of nodular vasculitis occurring in the setting of auto-immune cholangitis. The pathogenesis of this condition remains obscure, however possible causes include immune complex deposition or a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction.
