Notes: Abstract Weakening of a prestressed sawcut in Westerly granite under laboratory condition is accomplished by injecting pressurized fluid into the sawcut. After injection a sequence of stick-slips is observed while the deviatoric stress decreases successively with each stick-slip. On the basis of the experimental observation we develop a model of fault instability due to inhomogeneous and progressive weakening of the fault. According to this model, the fault surface is divided into the ‘slipped’ and the ‘locked’ regions, depending on whether or not the local state of stress satisfies the friction criterion. The average shear stress in the slipped region decreases with time and, in order to maintain a quasi-static equilibrium, shear stress in the remaining ‘locked’ region on the fault surface increases. This situation may last until a critical state of stress on the fault is met, at which a sudden instability (stick0slip) may occur. We suggest that this mechanism of stress transfer may be a viable mechanism of induced seismicity and aftershocks, in addition to the well-known mechanism of a local increase of pore pressure. By comparing the experimental data with model predictions we show that the critical condition for slip instability is when the average shear stress over the ‘locked’ region becomes equal to the value given by the friction criterion. Thus the friction criterion established for slip on fractures on which the state of stress is macroscopically uniform may also be applicable to fractures on which the stress state is macroscopically heterogeneous.

Notes: Abstract The film flow down a curved surface is analysed by an orthogonal curvilinear system and a perturbation in the small ratio of film thickness to minimum radius of curvature. General solutions are obtained to second order. The results are applied to plates with exponential curvature and sinusoidal curvature. Separation is most likely to occur on the upstream sides of a wavy plate.

Notes: Abstract We studied the ability of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and two anti-T-cell monoclonal antibodies, OKT3 and Pan T2, to induce interleukin-2 (IL2) production and proliferation in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from 14 patients with combined varied immunodeficiency (CVI). The median values of endogenous IL2 produced by mitogen-stimulated PBL was significantly lower in patients than controls irrespective of the mitogen used. The patients, taken as a group, had a significantly decreasedin vitro PBL response to mitogen stimulation when compared to controls. With the addition of a highly purified human IL2 preparation, the proliferative response in the majority of patients was significantly improved with all mitogens. Three patient groups could be distinguished: Group A (3/14) had full restoration of proliferative response with the addition of IL2, Group B (5/14) had partial restoration, and Group C (6/14) had no significant response. The monoclonal antibody, Pan T2, recognized a T-cell proliferative defect in 5 of 14 patients which neither PHA nor OKT3 recognized. This was not significantly corrected by the addition of IL2. This T-cell proliferative defect correlated with the lack of B-cell proliferation and immunoglobulin production in response to B-cell mitogens in three-fourths of the patients assayed. These data show that CVI patients are a heterogeneous group but have in common a decreasedin vitro production of IL2 resulting in a proliferative defect which is correctable at least in part,in vitro, in the majority by the addition of purified IL2.

Notes: Summary One end of a long, naturally curved elastic sheet is clamped onto an inclined plane. The other end is acted on by a constant vertical force which tends to open the curved sheet. This nonlinear large deflection problem is studied by series perturbation, numerical integration and exact analytic solution. The occurrence of roll-up depends on the angle of the inclined plane an a nondimensional parameter representing the importance of curvature and flexural rigidity to that of the end load.
