The rate of reaction of N-nitrosoacetanilide with ferrous versenate in slightly acid solution has been shown to be equal to its rate of rearrangement. One mole of ferrous versenate is oxidized per mole of benzenediazonium chloride at pH 5.0. In the two-phase benzene-water system 1.6 ± 0.1 mole of ferrous versenate are oxidized per mole of N-nitrosoacetanilide, which ratio decreases to 1.1 ± 0.1 when ethanol is added to the system. N-Nitrosoacetanilide in combination with ferrous versenate or citrate in slightly acid medium is a redox system for the initiation of the emulsion polymerization of styrene and butadiene-styrene. The initiating efficiency of this combination for styrene emulsion polymerization decreases continuously up to about 20% conversion when a constant value of approximately 0.2 is found.
