Notes: Efficient integration of multijunction photovoltaic cells requires current matching or voltage matching. To match voltages it is necessary to achieve complete electrical isolation between the component cells. Previously, electrical isolation could only be achieved with hybrid, mechanically stacked structures. We report the growth, fabrication, and characterization of an AlxGa1−xAs/GaAs photovoltaic cell with an epitaxial isolation layer of semi-insulating GaAs grown by molecular beam epitaxy. This will facilitate the integration of subcells that absorb different portions of the solar spectrum onto a single substrate.

Notes: Thermal annealing studies of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy have been performed concurrently on porous Si. A sharp reduction in the PL intensity is observed for annealing temperatures (approximately-greater-than)300 °C and this coincides with desorption of hydrogen from the SiH2 surface species. A brief etch in HF can restore the luminescence of the samples annealed below 400 °C. We conclude that SiH2 is essential to the visible luminescence in porous Si.

Notes: [Auszug] Apple-scoops (occasionally termed gouges) were freely used in apple-growing districts by edentulous persons to scrape small thin pieces off the fruit and thus facilitate mastication. This custom was particularly prevalent prior to the introduction into Great Britain, in 1855, of vulcanite as a base ...

Notes: [Auszug] The instrumental conditions were: Philips X-ray spectrograph, P W 1520; tungsten target tube, 48 kV., 20 m.amp.; argon-filled Geiger counter; X-ray path evacuated; exit collimator not fitted. Samples were prepared in a manner similar to that described by Roberts, but the 'Mylar' film was not ...

Notes: Abstract Existing instruments in classroom environment research have limitations when subgroups are investigated or case studies of individual students conducted. This study reports the validation and development of a personal form of the Science Laboratory Environment Inventory which is better suited to such studies. Further, systematic differences between scores on the class and personal forms of the instrument are reported along with comparisons of their associations with inquiry skill and attitudinal outcomes.

Notes: Summary Seventeen patients with primary osteoarthritis of the knee were evaluated with respect to the severity and clinical importance of pain, stiffness and physical function during the conduct of a double-blind randomized controlled trial of flurbiprofen SR versus diclofenac sodium SR using the WOMAC Osteoarthritis Index. Mean importance scores were similar for items within the same dimension as well as between items in different dimensions. In general, low levels of correlation were noted between the severity and importance of symptoms. Analysis of individual WOMAC items within a given subscale indicated that, although highly correlated, they differed from one another. Factor analysis further supported the contention that scores from items within a subscale could be summated into subscale scores. These observations are of importance in the weighting and aggregation of items within discrete dimensions and have the potential for reducing sample size requirements for clinical trials in osteoarthritis.

Notes: Accurate tail-to-peak intensity ratios are extracted from the spectra produced in a Si(Li) detector by x-rays of energies 2-10 keV. The widely used model of a surface layer of incomplete charge collection fails to explain the energy dependence of these data. The model is augmented to include loss of photoelectrons travelling back into the ICC layer from an interaction in the active silicon region; this gives excellent agreement with experiment. It is shown that the detection efficiency in the region of low x-ray energy may be deduced from the tail-to-peak ratios, together with measurement of the thicknesses of the beryllium window and the metal contact; a potential source of error in measuring the latter by the popular fluorescence technique is demonstrated.
