Notes:
Summary The permeability of electrolytes through inorganic membranes not exhibiting a purely semi-permeable character has been studied. The results on the thorium tungstate membrane show the influence of (i) valency and size of the anion (ii) adsorption on the permeability of different electrolytes. The membrane potential and the permeability of ions is governed by the relationshipY=ax 1/n. This relationship, besides confirming the fact that the higher the membrane potential, the lower is the permeability, further goes to prove that adsorption is directly connected to the membrane potential.
