Notes:
A choice between structures I and III for betanidin is now possible in favour of I on the basis of the formation of a well-characterized di-O-acetylderivative (II). The instability of betanidin and its ready transformation into other products at elevated pH's are shown to be due to its sensitivity to atmospheric oxygen. Betanidin and Isobetanidin have the same (namely S) configuration at C-2 and may differ only in the configuration at C-15. A possible biogenetic path is proposed.
