Summary The uptake of methylsulfate ions by isolated guinea pig atria and auricles has been studied. Methylsulfate was estimated by conversion to Ba SO4, which was determined nephelometrically. The uptake curve consists of two phases: a fast one with a half time of about 1 min, which corresponse to the uptake into the extracellular space and a very slow phase with a b-value of 0.03. The results suggest that the cellmembranes of guinea pig atria are practically impermeable for methylsulfate ions. The calculated extracellular space equals 32%, which agrees with the inuline space of 31%.
