Description / Table of Contents:
By ebullioscopic determination of the molecular weight in carbon disulfide, the molecular formula P2I4 was verified. This had been earlier derived by TROOST from measurements of the vapor density under partial decomposition of the substance. The density of the solid compound was pycnometrically determined in paraffin oil as d420 = 4,178 ± 0,002 g · cm-3. From measurements of the dielectric constants in CS2, the dipole moments of P2I4 (0,45 D) and PI3 (0,34 D, previous measurement by MALONE and FERGUSON 0 D) were determined. From the value of PI3, a bond moment of 0,24 D was derived for the P—I bond, leading to the conclusion that P2I4 has a staggered configuration, in which the two PI2 groups are distorted by a mean angle of approximately 85° (if one takes into consideration the restricted rotation around the P—P bond on account of the interaction between the unsymmetrical electron clouds of the P-atoms). The configuration of the free molecule in solution is therefore different from the „trans“ structure in the crystal lattice found by LEUNG and WASER.
Notes:
