Abstract The wurtzite lattice of zinc oxide has no center of symmetry but a polar axis, the hexagonalc axis. By cleavage perpendicular to this direction one exposes two “polar” surfaces. With regard to the bonding one of these may have a layer of zinc atoms on top, the other a layer of oxygen atoms. The two surfaces show large asymmetries in the etching behaviour. After a calibration by X-ray intensity measurements the zinc and the oxygen surface can be identified just by etching. The zinc surface shows more resistance against many acids than the oxygen surface does. There is also a connection between the orientation of thec axis and the direction of growth from the vapor phase. The sign of the effective ionic charge is derived from the observed sign of the static piezoelectric effect. It is positive for the zinc ions. The amount is shown to be at least one electronic charge. This lower limit agrees with the amount calculated by others from reflectivity measurements in the infrared spectral region.
