Aqueous solution of the uranyl nitrate and thorium nitrate were prepared in such a way that the concentration of uranyl nitrate was kept constant, while that of thorium nitrate was varied systematically, and the physico-chemical properties recorded. When the values are plotted against the concentration of thorium nitrate curves are obtained with the specific breaks. The kink occurs at exact stoichiometric ratio of the concentrations corresponding to the compound noted above.

Notizen: Experiments with the system Uranyl nitrate-Lanthanum nitrate-water viz., Conductance, pH, and spectrophotometry revealed the existence of the following compounds in solution. \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm (1)\,\, La(NO}_{\rm 3} {\rm)}_{\rm 3} - {\rm UO}_{\rm 2} ({\rm NO}_{\rm 3} )_2 {\rm \quad\quad(2)\,\,2La(NO}_{\rm 3} {\rm)}_{\rm 3} - {\rm UO}_{\rm 2} ({\rm NO}_{\rm 3})_2 $$\end{document} A set of 22 mixed solutions was prepared by following Nayar and Pande's monovariation method1. In all the solutions the concentration of uranyl nitrate was kept constant (i. e. M/200), while that of lanthanum nitrate varied systematically from 0.0M to 0.021M. The physico-chemical properties, namely conductivity, pH, and spectrophotometry were used for the investigation of complex-compounds in the above system. When these values are plotted against the varying concentration of Lanthanum nitrate two breaks were obtained in the regular curves at concentrations corresponding to the compounds having the above formulae. The results obtained by all these physico-chemical properties are in excellent agreement leading to the same conclusions.

Notizen: S-Carboxymethyl (SCM) kerateine preparations from a range of keratins were fractionated by acid precipitation into low-sulfur (SCMKA) and high-sulfur (SCMKB) fractions. Amiono acid analyses and optical rotatory dispersion measurements on the SCMKA fractions from different keratins indicated that the proportion of α-helical material (30-64%) increased with increasing leucine and glutamic acid contents and decreased with increasing SCM-cysteine and proline contents. It is shown that these variations in α-helix contents are due mainly to differences in the conformations of the principal components of the SCMKA fractions, although there is also a smaller contribution arising from contamination with varying amounts of non helical components. The thiol + disulfide contents for the parent keratins were measured and compared with the SCM -cysteine contents of the solubilized fractions. In general the SCM-cysteine contents of the SCMKA fractions increased with increasing thiol + disulfide content of the parent keratin, but these values were not directly proportional. The extent of total supercontraction in 8M LiBr solution was measured for the parent keratins and shown to bear no significant relationship to their disulfide contents. From the extents of first-stage and total supercontractions the disulfide contents of the contractile structures in the fibers were calculated according to a model described previously and compared with the analytical values for the SCM -cysteine contents of the SCMKA and SCMKB fraction. Data for both fractions were consistent with the model in that they were in each case related to the calculated values by a constant factor. However, because of simplifying assumptions in the model, it was not possible to identity positively one or other of these protein fractions with the contractile elements in the fiber.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Inhibition of copper corrosion in sodium hydroxide solutionsThe authors have investigated the effect of 30 organic substances on the corrosion of copper in aqueous NaOH solutions (0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 n). The following substances were found to be effective inhibitors: resorcin, phloroglucin, pyragallol, tanni, β-naphthom, m and p-aminophenol, glucose, furfural, cyclohexanon, 8-oxychinolin, hydrazine sulphate, chinalizarine, hydrochinon, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium rhodizonate, gallocyanine and acriflavine. In most cases, the inhibition effect is due to a covering layer of reaction products of metal, inhibitor and hydroxide. The decisive factor is the stability of the covering layer with the different lye concentrations.

Notizen: A generalized equation explicitly relating reduced density to reduced temperature and reduced pressure has been developed for calculating liquid densities of pure compounds on a digital computer. The analytical formulation is based mainly on a modified corresponding states principle and the graphical correlation of Lydersen, Greenkorn, and Hougen. The calculated densities from the equation reproduce the literature data within 2% for sixty-two saturated liquids and nineteen compressed liquids. With the aid of a pseudocritical method and a generalized equation of vapor pressure, the same equation is readily applied to the estimation of liquid mixture densities. The method of Prausnitz and Gunn is chosen for the evaluation of pseudocritical constants. For fifteen binary systems, one ternary system, and one quinary system, the one hundred fifty-nine calculated densities agree with the literature data to within 3%. This method is limited to pseudoreduced temperatures less than 1.0.

Notizen: The factors affecting the efficacy of a closely packed bed of mixed cotton and a supporting fiber (Teflon, glass, Dynel) were evaluated for oil-in-water dispersions. Several other water-organic systems were also tested. Superficial velocities ranged from 0.2 to 3.5 ft./min. Successful coalescence was attained at interfacial tensions as low as 3.5 dynes/cm. Dispersed phase viscosity was varied form 1.4 to 137 centipoise. For a mixed-fiber bed with a specific ratio of fiber species, there is an optimum bed depth for best performance. High-speed cinephotomicrographic observations at 100 × and up to 4,000 frames/sec. indicated that fiber wettability is not the most important factor for successful operation.

Notizen: Conductivity, Spectrophotometry, pH and Refractive Index of the mixed solutions of Glycine and Silver Nitrate revealed the existence of 6 complexes. Three of normal valencies at (2:1, 2:3 and 1:1) molecular ratios and three of abnormal valencies at (1:2, 1:3, 1:4). All were crystallized out except (1:4) and their shapes were found out by microscopic studies.
