Notes: Hatching eggs from inbred lines of chickens (inbreeding coefficient exceeds 95%) which show various degrees of resistance and susceptibility to Rous sarcoma, were used for experimentation. Adult tissues were grafted onto the chorioallantois on the tenth day of incubation and tissues of host and control embryos were harvested on the twentieth day of incubation. Enzymes were localized in tissues by histochemical procedures.Small pieces of tissue (thymus or bursa), when grafted onto the chorioallantois, increased the size of the spleen in host embryos although splenomegaly did not invariably occur. Two types of reactions were observed in the spleen, i.e., enlarged spleens with cysts or enlarged spleens which from a morphological point of view were normal. Grafts of either thymus or bursa decreased the size of the host embryo's bursa or were without effect. When weight of the bursa of host embryos was significantly less than that of control embryos on the twentieth day of incubation, this size relationship persisted in chicks four weeks post hatching.Intensity of dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase reactions in cysts of enlarged spleens and in the multinucleated giant cells investing them suggests that they consist of groups of degenerating cells. Intensity of enzyme reaction indicates that enlarged spleens of host embryos in which cysts were absent were normal. Enzyme reactions in the bursae of experimental embryos were more intense than those identified in the same tissues of control embryos. Catabolic reactions were the predominant type in grafts ten days subsequent to implantation. Grafts increased the number of erythrocytes in the peripheral blood of host embryos.

Notes: The lobular, compound, branched, tubular, salt-secreting lacrymal glands of two marine turtles, Chelonia mydas and Caretta caretta are similar in structure and in histochemical reactivity. Blood from the centrolobular arteries flows through a rich capillary bed counter to the flow of tubule secretion. The capillary endothelium is reactive for adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). Nerves containing cholinesterase pervade the connective tissue. At the blind ends of the secretory tubules small basophilic peripheral cells contain an abundance of glycogen, monoamine oxidase (MAO) and phosphorylase but little succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) or cytochrome oxidase (CTO). Non-mitochondrial ATPase is concentrated at the luminal interface of these cells. The larger principal cells, lining the major portion of the secretory tubules, are rich in SDH and CTO but contain relatively little glycogen, MAO or phosphorylase. Broad intercellular channels reactive for mucopolysaccharide are formed by intermeshing, pleomorphic microvilli that fringe the extensive lateral surfaces of the principal cells. The cytoplasm of these cells contains profiles of smoothsurfaced endoplasmic reticulum (SSER), abundant mitochondria, and prominent Golgi membranes. Profiles of SSER and small membrane bound vesicles fill the apical cytoplasm but mitochondria are lacking. The luminal secretory border of the cell is extremely limited in area. Two types of epithelial cells line the duct system: basal cells that react strongly for non-specific esterase and MAO; and goblet cells containing mucopolysaccharide, acid phosphatase, cholinesterase, and ATPase. The principal cells, close to the arterial blood supply, contain the highest concentrations of oxidative enzymes and have special modifications of the cell surface consistent with their role in salt concentration and secretion.

Notes: The fundamental actions of straight-chain hydrocarbons on the three known primary chemoreceptor cell types of the blowfly, Phormia regina, were studied in quantitative terms. Lower alcohols and long-chain amines act in two stages: first a reversible inhibition, and then injury, of the salt, water, and sugar receptors in the labellar sensilla. The primary effects on salt and water receptors resemble hydrocarbon narcosis of nerve. Effects on sugar receptors, when analyzed kinetically, superficially resemble competitive inhibition. Other evidence, however, indicates that a non-specific effect on sugar receptor sites is more likely. The electrophysiological results from labellar chemoreceptors indicate that the previously reported hydrocarbon behavioral rejection thresholds are best explained by the inhibition of the sugar receptors. This conclusion is strengthened by further electrophysiological and behavioral tests on tarsal chemoreceptors.
