Notes: Meissner effect measurements were used to characterize the effect of copper depletion and silver substitution on the bulk superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3Oy. A strong copper composition dependence of superconductivity was observed: A 20% depletion of copper from the samples resulted in an 88% decrease in the strength of superconductivity in YBa2Cu3Oy as measured by the Meissner effect. Because flux trapping and field penetration were likely to be significant in the high-Tc materials, it was difficult to determine the volume fraction of superconducting material in the samples. Variations in the lattice constants were consistent with copper composition-induced disorder on the orthorhombic lattice which became more pseudocubic, i.e., a(approximately-equal-to)b=c/3, with copper depletion. The addition of silver had essentially no effect on superconductivity or the lattice constants of YBa2Cu3Oy.

Notes: Treatment of soil in October 1963 with 60 1b (a.i.)/acre (67⋅3 kg/ha) quintozene or 400 1b acre (448⋅4 kg/ha) D-D killed more than 95 per cent of the Longidorus elongatus present and largely prevented transmission of raspberry ringspot and tomato black ring viruses to ‘Red-gauntlet’ strawberry planted in April 1964. The herbicide chloroxuron at 5 1b (a.i)/acre (5⋅6 kg/ha) did not affect L. elongatus numbers but delayed infection of the strawberry plants by controlling weed sources of virus. Quintozene and D-D increased fruit yields four to six-fold in 1965 and nine to twelve-fold in 1966; chloroxuron caused only small increases. Quintozene persisted in the soil for several years but was not detected in strawberry fruit. In an experiment on virus-free soil, quintozene had no effect on ‘Talisman’ strawberry or ‘Mailing Jewel’ raspberry, but adversely affected growth of ‘Lloyd George’ raspberry and sugar beet. L. elongatus migrated slowly through soil and congregated in the root zone of strawberry plants. Populations in untreated plots increased about two-fold per year. Eggs were laid from April to July.

Notes: The effect of milk feeding on the ontogeny of serum IgA in breast and cow milk formula fed neonates was studied. There was a rise in serum IgA concentrations from the 2nd week in both groups, but no difference in rate of appearance or concentrations in relation to age, gestation or sex. The ingestion of RSV antibody-rich colostrum was associated with a rise in serum anti-RSV IgA in 2 preterm infants during the perinatal period. We suggest that there are 2 mechanisms which regulate the ontogeny of circulating IgA: an early but small intestinal uptake of colostral IgA, and a later endogenous production, which in this study was not influenced by composition of feeds.

Notes: [Auszug] Observations of food selection by oryx and Grant's gazelle, and measurements of temperature and humidity, were made during a severe drought in September 1965 on the El Barta plains in the Northern Frontier Province of Kenya. The local cattle, herded by nomadic tribesmen, were absent and thousands ...

Notes: Abstract Lipid peroxidation may play a role in the pathogenesis of the haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS). Thirteen children with the post-enteropathic form of HUS were studied using conjugated diene lipids as markers of in vivo lipid peroxidation. Levels of total conjugated diene lipids and 9,11-linoleic acid, the principal conjugated diene in human plasma, were greater in the acute phase of this disorder than in controls. The ratio of plasma vitamin E to lipid was lower than that in children with other renal diseases, and the expected positive correlation between vitamin E and lipids did not hold for HUS patients. These data provide further evidence of lipid peroxidation in HUS and a disturbance in the metabolism of the principal lipid-bound anti-oxidant vitamin E.

Notes: Summary Cross-sections (thickness 10 μm) of whole autopsied left and right anterior tibialis muscles of seven young previously healthy right-handed men (mean age 23 years, range 18–32 years) were prepared for light-microscope enzyme histochemistry. Muscle cross-sectional area and total number of fibres, mean fibre size (indirectly determined) and proportion of the different fibre types (type 1 and type 2 on basis of myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase characteristics), in each muscle cross-section were determined. The analysis showed that the cross-sectional area of the left muscle was significantly larger (P〈0.05), and the total number of fibres was significantly higher (P〈0.05), than for the corresponding right muscle. There was no significant difference for the mean fibre size or the proportion of the two fibre types. The results imply that long-term asymmetrical low-level daily demands on muscles of the left and the right lower leg in right-handed individuals provide enough stimuli to induce an enlargement of the muscles on the left side, and that this enlargement is due to an increase in the number of muscle fibres (fibre hyperplasia). Calculations based on the data also explain why the underlying process of hyperplasia is difficult, or even impossible, to detect in standard muscle biopsies.
