    Notes: An extension of Furnas's method is described. The variation of intensity of an axial reflection as the crystal is rotated about the goniometer axis is used to give a curve of relative transmission T against azimuthal angle φ for the corresponding reciprocal lattice level. Transmission coefficients for any general reflexion hkl are then given approximately by T(hkl) = [T(φinc) + T(φret)]/2 where φinc and φret are the azimuthal angles of the incident and reflected beams. Equations are derived for (φinc and φret and the accuracy of the method is discussed.

    Notes: Résumé La déoxyribonucléoprotéine (DNP) du thymus de veau peut lier de l'histone supplémentaire en solution physiologique. La plupart de cette protéine est très faiblement liée et s'est degagée par HCl de 3,3 mM ou moins. On suggère ainsi que l'histone supplémentaire soit combinée aux groupes carboxyl des histones originales du DNP. Néanmoins, environ 10% de la protamine, ajouté pareillement au DNP, fut liée fortement ce qui suggère qu'elle peut atteindre les groupes phosphates libres sur l'ADN. La protamine apparemment n'a pas deplacée les histones lorsqu'elle fut liée au DNP.

    Notes: The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of a complex, partially colloidal substrate is divided into oxidation (fo) and synthesis (fs) fractions. The substrate being investigated is a suspension containing 10 mg./l. of dry skim milk. The oxidized and synthesized fractions of the BOD are shown to be 38.4% and 61.6%, respectively. The division of BOD is related to the time at which maximum cell growth appears. The time required to obtain maximum cell production is shown to be at least 10 hr. The relationship between the time to maximum cell production and the apparent initial activity of the seed organisms is discussed.
